i took my cz 858 to the range today and fired a bunch of rounds off and the paint was melting off of the barrel. wondering what is the best thing to use to get all of the paint off of the gun. also, how to totally disassemble the rifle to do this. thanks. anyone else out there have this problem? love the rifle though. lots of comments on it at rhe range. oh ya.....where can i get cheap crates of ammo from. how much $$ are the crates. thanks.

Fired a load of ammo in one session with my 858 and got it really hot but the paint never melted, the oil just started sizzling and smoking off the rifle.

If you want to get the paint off you will find paint stripper perfect for the job, I swear it could have been purpose made for it.

^ how many rds did you fire in a row before the smoking/sizzling/burning start? 20? 30? Just wondering...

Don't know exactly but lots, certainly well over 100. I wanted to see if it would cook off, but I'm pleased to say it did not.

So, just to be clear. You fired 100 rounds without a cool down period? I'm only asking because it is best to learn from someone who has already done it. :)

I heated it up to what I thought might do the job, but as nothing happened so I put a load more through it as fast as I could. It probably had another 100or so but it was still hot when I started for the second time. I thought it was impossible to get it any hotter, but nothing happened to the paint, so it would seem it was not as hot as titleist had his.

i think its the oil its packed in that was smoking and dripping off. I have put alot of rounds through my first CZ in a short period, nothing happened, even though there was smoke coming from the handgaurds

That sounds a much more likely explanation.

The paint that's on there will surely be a special heat resistant paint, I heard it mentioned somewhere that it is "baked on ".

I personally like the paint finish, pink would be better but it is nice as it is, it is part of the character of the rifle, and a damn fine little rifle it is.

I can't believe you asked that question. Look at his handle! Sheesh!! :p

LOL

As for the CZ painjob I went shooting with 3 other people and we shot 300 rounds without a cooldown and the paint job is still perfect, although the barrel did become untouchably hot and the oil residue was smoking.

270

according to Czechoslovak military manual for original Sa vz. 58 the barrel is able to shoot continuously 270 shoots. I.e. also paint should be O.K. together with barrel.

The only way I see that paint coming off is if the barrel gets red hot. If it does get red hot then you have more to worry about then the paint lol
