Last fall when I was in moose/elk country I carried my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 loaded with 350gr A-Frames and my Rem 700LSS 375RUM loaded with either 300gr Sierra Gamekings or 300gr A-Frames.
This year I am going to do all of my elk/moose hunting including my grizzly hunt next month with my T/C Contender carbines in either 375JDJ = 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps and 45-70 = 300gr Alpha LaFrank spitzers @ 1900fps or 430gr Cast Performance WLNGC's @ 1750fps.
375 H&H with a Bushnell 6500 on top and my bullet weight and make is gonna be the Hornaby Heavey Mags 270gr Interlocks. That should take Down those little moosies or Bears
I never got to shoot an elk this last year, but the gun I was packing was a Tikka T3 in 308 Winchester shooting 150 grain Nosler AccuBond making about 2850FPS muzzle velocity. I downgraded to the somewhat softer/faster bullet after last year having some (lack of) expansion problems with 165 grain Hornady InterBonds (out of a Kimber Montana in 308 Win at about 2700FPS). I never got an elk with the Tikka, but both of the deer I shot with it (a nice mulie and a whitetail) both got knocked down with serious authority.
In most years prior, I was shooting an old 2 groove 303 British, loaded with 180 grain Winchester grey box making about 2360FPS muzzle velocity. That's the only thing I've ever actually shot an elk with, personally, and it killed em' dead as dead gets -- only went about 30 yards.
Remington 700 XCR topped with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10X40mm blasting 180gr Winchester XP3's. I'm starting to reload this year so I'm going to be loading 180gr Barnes Triple Shocks.
I hunt moose with most everything. From 7.62x39 to 375 RUM, or muzzle loaders. What I use depends more on the terrain; moose aren't that hard to kill. Loads, well, pretty much always handloads worked right up to the max.
I used a vintage (1941) Winchester Model 70 in .300 H&H.
Up top is an older Bausch and Lomb 3-9X40 Elite 3000 im Redfield rings and bases.
I was using some hand loads with Speer 165 grain boattails over IMR 4350.
Not sure what the charge weight was off the top of my head, but I know it was a middle of the road load from the manual.
I haven't shot an elk with it yet, but have no worries about it's effect when I do. Having shot a number of deer with it...
.30-06 M700 BDL-DM, 180 grain Accubonds @ 2680 FPS, 3-9 4200.
.375 Ruger 260 grain Accubonds @ 2712 FPS, 1-4 VX2
.30-30 1957 Win 94, 170 grain bullets, no chrono reading, IRONS baby!!
No moose on the ground, but that is what I carried.
Elk rifle this year was (again...) Browning A-Bolt Stainless in .270Win, with a VariX-II 3-9x40 on it. Loaded with 140gr Barnes Triple-shoks in front of 60.5 gr H4831sc.
I dont know if its perfect or not....but its a 7-08AI with 140TSX. This one didnt complain one bit! He didnt have time before he somehow just fell over.....
