The perfect moose/elk rifle, or not...

You don't take both?

I don't leave home without at least 2 rifles on any hunt/trip...

Not a true gun nutz unless you have more than one rifle along... :p

I suppose if most of your hunting is done from a drive up camp, it makes sense to have extra weapons along, but it's a pain to carry 2 rifles once you get off the road.

Remington 700 BDL .338WM w/Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 shooting Remington factory ammo w/250gr core lokt bullets. One shot and Mr. Moose dropped dead after 2 steps at 250yrds. Very happy with this set up. Will be trying for moose/elk again this year.

WOW you hike into camps when you are moose hunting I'm defiantely not interest in that kind of packing to easy to hunt them where I can get my truck or quad too.

I also don't own any weapons I just own firearms... ;)

Any fly in hunt that includes moose means you are going to do some packing. With horses you can often get close but sometimes you will need to pack. I wouldn't want to carry 2 rifles in either situation.

The last moose hunt I was on was 2 years ago, and it was straight up a couple of kms. No way we were packing "back up" rifles. it was grizzly country, but on the second trip we only took one weapon between us, since we wanted to minimize our weight both up and down.

Are elk harder to kill than moose. Whatever harder means.

.

It seems that I will always hear stories from friends or friends of friends that have an elk go a long ways after being hit perfectly. Lots of tracking stories of elk hit in one lung or in meat/ bone no lungs. I also hear lots of stories of elk being lost after a seemingly good hit. I rarely hear these types of stories with moose. I would guess the ratio of Tough Elk story to Tough moose story is 10 to 1.

My guess is elk will go further than a moose on the same type of hit. Elk naturally run when in danger, and their whole life is spent on the move covering a ridiculous amount ground. It's their instinct to take off and keep going when in danger. Moose don't move much more further than a mile or two circle their whole lives, their instinct is the move off a little ways then hunker up when in danger. This is my reasoning why elk have the reputation of being though, they go further, and can be lost where as a moose will be beaded down, dead within 100 yards easy to find. Just a guess and how I see it....

I did not have Moose draw last year and only saw Moose during my Elk hunt but let me tell that bang stick surely piles up them deer :)

I was successful getting a Bull Moose draw for MU 5-02 in B.C. this year and the plan is to use a recent acquisition, A Husqvarna in 358 Norma Magnum with a Leupold 3x9, VARI-X II. For ammo, I have an adequate supply of Norma factory 250gr and it'll either be that or handloads using the Barnes 225gr TSX.

On trips to the B.C. interior for Moose and on trips to southeast areas in the province for Deer and Elk, I usually take a spare rifle. On three different occasions over the years because of damage caused by falls etc, the spare has come in handy. For that reason and because I'm taking some of my 'extra' brass and a set of dies for a guy in the area, my spare this year is a Schultz & Larsen in 7x61 S&H with a Leupold 3.5 x 10 VARI-X III. Ammo, probably reloads using Barnes 140gr TTSX. Time and conditions permitting;), perhaps 'we' can get together and do some comparing and shooting;):).
