The perfect Mountain Goat Gun ??

Iv taken goats with the swede a 280 and one with my 300, none of the goats would have noticed the difference. key is busting bones imo, shoulders/spine. One thing to keep in mind, often youl have steep shot angles, hi recoil rifles can often find the eyebrow.

Good luck on your draw, I'll be chasing winter goats this year as well.

Any rifle which will work for deer will work for goats. Any rifle you like to shoot and carry is a good hunting rifle. I climb up into goat country and see goats every year.and carry a variety of rifles. When I get a draw, things are no different except that I can shoot the goat if I want to. I have elected not to do so for various reasons. Either recovery would be difficult or impossible or I hadn't seen enough goats and didn't think I should shoot one. Ultimately, I think the choice of boots may be more important than the choice of rifle! I always carry a rifle which is enough for bear or a big bull elk since there is always the chance I may need to use it for eother purpose.

Find the combination of the lightest, ugliest, best shooting, weather-proof, bear repellency and reliability that you can put together. If you hate it in spite of those traits its also a bonus because it may be alternately be used as a walking stick, club, canoe paddle, tent pole, rain gauge and grave marker. Cost is also important, because when you get tired enough to throw it away and go home you might give it a second or third thought if it cost several times as much as your first car. If its expensive enough that your guide would wade into an icey stream after you throw it away you could also probably buy it back after you get back to camp. Assuming you make it back to camp.

Excellent write up Ardent.

I don't hunt with guides so want a cartridge that is also capable of dealing with game with claws.

I shot my last two goats with my Voerre Black Forest chambered in 308 Norma Mag loaded with 180gr Norma yellow ball tip 180gr bullets @ 3060fps reloads and my blued synthetic stocked Rem 700 Mtn rifle in 280 Rem can't remember the load for sure thinking it was a 140gr Partition started to get into stainless rifles after these hunts.

If I were to go in specifically after goats again I might take my Rem 700 XCR 11 camo synthetic stocked rifle in 25-06 or my grandfathers old Husqvarna in 270 Wby.

Ahhh who am I kidding I'll be alone or have my son/sons with me = I'm taking my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps I'm good with this combo out to 500 yards and 350gr TSX @ 2450fps for when things are up close and personal.
