I'm without a 12ga and am looking to purchase / build myself a turkey slayer! Looking for some opinions on what others have done. I am thinking along lines of a pump action with a short barrel and synthetic stock with ability to handle 3.5's. Kind of like the tactical turkey model from mossy but not sure about practicality of the stock if I decide to do some fowl/deer hunting down the road,,, but can appreciate LOP adjust-ability it offers. Also considering idea of putting on a knoxx specops for recoil reduction. I'm torn!!

I've looked at mossy 535, and a remmy 887. I've owned a win1300 and handled other 870's. Never handled a browning though.

You don't really need the 3.5 inch shell. I've shot a pile of turkeys with 2.75 shells. But saying that, I'll probably use my SP-10 next time I go turkey hunting. Just make sure your shotgun patterns tight with the load you choose. A short barrel would be handy, but I've just always used one of my duck guns. The 870s are great, and you can get a pile of add-ons for them.

I've used 3" with success, was thinking it might be nice to have the option to go bigger for some more abuse :D What's SP-10??

I like idea of 870 for after-markets as well. That was one of the reasons I didn't hang on to my winny 1300

The SP-10 is Remington's 10 gauge semi-auto shotgun. It is a real cannon. Mine has been a great waterfowl gun.

Can't go wrong with an 870. They are good shotguns.

I don not think there is such a thing as a "perfect gun" for any game animal fur, feathered or otherwise.
But, rather a combination of a good gun and good ammo matched to the type of hunting you are doing.
So, the SP 10 by Remington in a blind for turkey with a good dose of lead shot for that Big Tom.
Hope that offers some information,

Rob

I use a model 535ats 28" barrel with a custom 4x full choke. It will handle 3.5" but I use #5 rio mini mags 2 3/4". Dead is dead. Last year I used my sxs 10ga but at over 11lbs she's heavy. The year before that I took 2 nice toms with a baikal sxs f/m with 7/8oz of #6. Pattern the gun with several loads and use whatever gun you feel most comfortable. I've seen old cooeys knock em over at 40 yards

I use 3" winchester turkey shell sin my 870... they pattern really nice... the last two birds I shot it took their heads clean off.... shots were only 10 and 15 yards mind you.....

Go figure... Lol... To be honest, turkey hunting is all about getting them in close... I have shot 9... No missed shots... All under 20 yards.. To me, that is the fun of turkey hunting...

Actually there is a perfect turkey gun ;) The 870 Max Gobbler topped with an Eotec holosight
