For those of you who have been to my clinics, or listened to my old jokes, I've commonly spoken about the "ping" test upon re-assembly of your rifle.
Have a look at this video, I'm featured at 05:48 closer to the end of the Glock 17 Gen4 review with Ryan!

You will hear that "ping" sound when I'm shooting my M1A (I own BOTH M1A and NORC M14 rifles) for this review. Good ####ographic sound for us M14 addicts!
The "PING" sound is the tuning fork sound/vibration coming off a NM or match tuned flash suppressor. I cannot recall hearing that PING when I competed with USGI TRW M14 rifles that I bought for $ 400 (plus taxes). Once I took the #7 tapered pin reamer to the flash suppressor and reamed out the unit to 0.406" ID, then the flash suppressor would sing.
It also helps to tighten up your gas cylinder assembly by shimming and/or by welding the front band to the gas cylinder body (read the sticky(ies) at the top of this forum). The barreled receiver would behave as one unit (read: bolt action rifle barrel) and the vibration patterns would cause that flash suppressor to "Ping" or "Sing". Call it whatever you will, but it sure is sweet!
Cheers,
Barney
