Out of curiosity - what is stopping Colt from producing a parkerized (or stainless) clone of an M700 (maybe with a slightly longer tenon) in a composite stock with an integral scope rail, iron sights, detachable magazines in 7.62 Nato? Others are building similar clones already I believe. Some parts interchangeability (if it transpired) wouldnt be a great crime would it?
What's wrong with DND calling the Indian government and asking them to produce 10,000 No4 rifles in 303 - it'll cost a lot less, and the Indians could do the whole thing in less than a year, while they're at it they could order a full suite of spares and we'd be good for another 70 years. Note that the Indian Armoury at Ishapore still produces No4 rifles in 8mm for the home market, so a 308 Lee is a possibility, at a cost that would allow for double the required number of rifles, plus parts.

Has part one been completed yet? has anyone submitted a design that they are willing to let Colt Canada have and ultimately build? who are the finalists for trials? Are they fielding more than one design for testing during OP Nanook? If only one rifle is fielded during OP Nanook - and it "fails" - then what? Is OP Nanook (as originally conceived) going to happen based on budget constraints?
I think the product quality was questionable? There is also a lot of hand fitting involved in proper servicing of the Enfield. DOD prefers everything to be serviceable by parts swapping, saves on proper gun smithing training and time.
There are something like 3 things that can go wrong with a Lee Enfield, 2 of which are caused by abuse, but I guess in this age of instant joy, and computerized "learning", teaching someone how to use a gauge is costly
well it will be tough to find a simpler design to implement - and with a large number of existing suppliers of parts - other wise the unit cost on 6500 rifles is going to make the frigate program look like a drop in the bucket! and ... like the Cadet C10 -- will never come to pass.
Do you suppose they will manufacture or simply assemble the rifle at Colt Canada? if manufacture? what components? what will be outsourced?
(I suppose they could always offer to buy the production machinery for the m14 back from the PRC -errr - (cough cough) I mean Taiwan... and produce an M305 clone - at least that passed arctic tests already. Its not like they would have to pay for any intellectual property and they would never be a competitive threat to Norinco...
I may not be a "weapons tech", but bedding a Number 4 is NOT rocket science. If I can do it and get it to shoot, then so can anyone with half an operative brain.

Well, I would change out the barrel, receiver, bolt, stock, put a cheese grater on it, at least two flashlights. I would probably keep the screws and the butt plate original. Sound silly? Think 10/22....
