Running shots can be far more challenging than 500 yard shots. And it's pretty easy to practice shooting long range, but difficult to practice rifle shooting at moving targets.

Stationary, broadside, close shots are always the highest percentage IF you actually have practised, but the average practice time for average hunters and long range hunters is very different in my experience. So are the conditions they find acceptable to shoot in.
