Not at all. The PCMR carried 30-0 Win 94's during WWII and they knew how to use 'em well. Most of TR's troops were issued 30-40 Krag rifles,
but Teddy preferred his Win 1895 lever gun. For hunting & the occasional scrum, its hard to put down a good lever rifle.
 
^ now available on Finnish auction sites for about as much as a tradex husqy in 9.3 and 8mm wildcats with bubba stocks

I do not know it was the caliber or the man but a lot of wounded animals with teddy ...

True, with the possible point that real fighting calibers (for horns and fangs, not folks) only live in bolts and break actions. Well, the BAR might have come in a 458 WInchester, but that would be the exception to the rule.

Teddy was also damned near legally blind, and he was charging in the days where the semi-aristocratic regimental leader could equip himself as he saw fit.

I get around this by hunting with a BRNO 600 30-06 and work/camp stopping with the 602 so I'm used to the safety.

Under pressure/stress, muscle memory rules.

That's a good suggestion, Rob. Here's mine--very similar to yours: Zeiss Diavari-C 1.5-4.5x18. Here it is on my dangerous game rifle, an all-out custom Sauer 90 in 9.3x64 Brenneke chambering:
