Hello Gents,

Would like to ask you for opinions and experiences of Chiappa lever actions. Especially 44 mag.I had kind of bitter experience with Rossi Ranch hand 44mg.Was fun in the beginning, until decided to try 400gr Buffalo bore .After that had cycling and feeding issues , gunsmith told me they are picky and heavy load could do that. Sold it as is it to friend for peanuts, who was optimistic for having it and , told me later that he is avoiding heavy loads as was told. Later searched and found that Rossi are prone to this malfunctions. Recently have my attention on Chiappa replicas(well still would like to have one lever in my gun safe).Sometimes you cannot find all information on internet and would like to ask about it .How are they - shooting, feeding& cycling and are 44mg heavy loads are causing the same problems.

Thank you very much

I have a 357 mares leg, I've fired a few different factory loads, but I mostly use the leverevolution stuff. My gun was a little rough in the loading gate. I disassembled and cleaned it, tweaked the spring a bit, honed the loading gate hole, seems better.

Most people here have said rossi are better built. Maybe a smoother action out of the box, but my rifle goes bang every time.

Bought a little Trapper 44 mag with Skinner sight in 2015, It's been very reliable. Action smooth out very fast if you do your part.

I have the Chiappa M1886 Ridge Runner Takedown, 12” barrel in 45-70. The hard chrome finish with soft touch fore stock and butt stock make it an excellent all weather bush gun. Ghost ring rear sight and Fibre optic front allow really fast target acquisition and both the 250gr and 325gr Hornady Leverevolution FTX ammunition cycles without issue. Easy 5” groupings at 75 yards.

Excellent quality, fit and finish. .357 is probably my favorite plinker. Had some play in my TD between barrel and receiver which used to annoy me until I figured out that there are 2 set screws on the barrel side that allow you to eliminate barrel play.

Chiappa Mares Leg

I recently bought the Chiappa 1892 Scorpio Mares Leg in 357, my first lever action.
It seems well built, lever action is buttery smooth.
Put about 200 rounds of .38 special and 357 Mag thru it and no jams.
Still trying to sight it in as the sights provided are limited in adjust ment options, and I, and 2 gun shops couldnt get them out because the screw that holds them in was the size of a jewelers screw and red lock tight it seems.
I beat the hell out of it with a hammer and punch (nicked the barrel, I hate that), but got them out, now looking for a better replacement.
Over all a fun shooter up to 50 Yards, a little tougher at 100.

I have a Chiappa Alaskan in .44 mag with a 20"bbl

I find it good. Heaviest bullet I have put through it is 240gr factory and probably punchiest is a max load 200gr XTP with a max charge of H110.

So far so good.

The scope is a Leupold 2,5x28 Scout scopt and the rings are Hawke

This is a 50" yd group

(3 shots group, one is from dialling in the scope but a patch fell off - not sure which it is so group is either about 0.6" or 1.1" centre to centre depending on which holes are correct.)

So, I would say more than acceptable for most uses of a 44 mag takedown

I have had .44 magnum lever actions made by Rossi, Marlin, Browning, and Chiappa. Chiappa was the best built, most accurate and nicest finish. It's the one I kept after experimenting with them all.
