Heya Campers,

I've been with the Reserves in BC since early '04, so naturally I don't get to shoot nearly as much as I'd like to. That's why I'm looking at getting into CQB/Service Rifle with the BCRA.

As such, I'm turning to my favorite experts for advice. The GunNutz! :D

Anyhoo...

------------------------------

(1) What is a good, cheap rifle I can start with that will perform decently without breaking the bank? I'm looking to go with a 5.56. (I've got a Norc M4 in mind at the moment, but I'm open to suggestions.)

------------------------------

(2) What is a good starting pistol? I've got a Glock 22 that I'm pretty good with, but I've been told that service competitions require you to fire a 9mm? How would a Beretta 92FS handle itself, hypothetically? What about the good 'ol Browning Hi-Power?

------------------------------

(3) What weapons accessories are good to start with, and what are a 'tacticool' waste of time/money? (Sights/Scope? Lights? Sling? Vertical grip? Bipod? Rails?)

------------------------------

(4) What are the opinions regarding Chest Rigs vs. Tac Vests vs. Custom Rigs? I've got a CF Tac Vest clone I cobbled together for paintball, and come old US web gear. Thoughts?

------------------------------

(5) I live in Vancouver, and I'm wondering where can I go to train/practice in Southern BC? Just a link or contact info would be great.

------------------------------

(6) I've been to a couple of other rifle competitions and I've seen that different groups (Precision, tactical, smallbore, etc) treat new guys in different ways.

What is the CQB/Service community like? What should I show up the first time expecting to do/learn/be told? Do I jump in and participate, or hold back and wait to be shown how to roll?

------------------------------

Thanks in advance guys. I'm pretty pumped to get started and I appreciate the help. :)

For CQB a norc will work just fine, look at Pobcats scores from sat, that was done with a Norc

Nothing wrong with a glock22 for cqb, if you shoot it well use it

lights just add weight, a muzzle break helps but isnt necessary, slings are a must for transitions, other then that all you really "need" is an optic if your looking to save money vortex makes some decent reasonably priced red dots

As for rigs again its what ever your comfortable with, some guys go full tacticool come guys play it simple, what ever you can run best

as for the last two, im in Ontario so cant comment on that but hope everything else helps

I have used a number of different rifles, just for the fun of trying them out. The best platfrom is AR because of mag change speed. Double up the mags and it is super fast. I use a Norc. When kept clean, it runs like a Chinese watch....

A 1.5-4x scope or a red dot really helps. I prefer a scope.

The pistol shooting is where a lot of points are made or lost. You need a pistiol with a good trigger and sights. It is important that the mag ejects smoothly. A heavy pistol might shoot faster. I use mild ammo in my rifle and pistol.

(3) What weapons accessories are good to start with, and what are a 'tacticool' waste of time/money? (Sights/Scope? Lights? Sling? Vertical grip? Bipod? Rails?)

An open holster on the right hip, 2 pistol mag holsters on left hip (I use Fobus) and some kind of 4 rifle mag pouch center left. These rifle mags have 5 rounds. I put the 4 round rifle mag in my back pocket.

Speed of reloading is important. Whatever you use should place mags close to your left hand.

You should practice mag changes for rifle and pistol at home.

We don't take ourselves very seriously. We all manage to make mental errors in the program. So long as you don't sweep the rnage with your muzzle you will fit right in and have fun.
