The REAL cost of buying a new handgun

Interested in a few new to me pistols and itching to try them. The HK SFP 9, SIG 320 RX, Walther Q Match, and the upcoming CZP-10C come to mind.

Unfortunately, I’ll likely never buy any more mainly due to, what I think, the true cost of actually owning them.

If I buy a handgun, I must get at least one good holster for it, mag carriers, likely change out the sights, and, at least, 2 spare mags, and maybe a pistol light. This substantially increases the true cost of the gun. Then I think how often will I actually shoot them, vs. my tried and true Glocks. After I add it all up, I sigh and leave the EE or dealer page.

Maybe there’s just nothing really revolutionary or exciting in the handgun world anymore. A 9mm is a 9mm. A .45 is a .45 etc.

I know it’s a First World Problem and it’s not that I can’t afford one. Maybe I’m just bored during this Xmas break.
Anyways, how many of you guys are like me and need to fully accessorize your gun before you feel complete? Are there many of you who just buy one gun with one mag and are happy with that?

See what I mean?

I just bought a revolver, no mags needed, and I don't feel I need a holster for it either, not like I am going to do much carrying. No speedloaders required either, I kind of like loading the cylinders individually. Just me though.

Some I need fully kitted, others like my P210 I know I'll never carry, compete with, or holster. I like owning that one and some others purely because I can, so a few spare mags, a bit of ammo, and my range mat are all that's required. Horses for courses, although I am looking for a new gun to fit the PPC duty matches and am facing similar costs. Difference is I no longer have any service type pistols, so I'm starting over from scratch. If I still had my Glock 17 I wouldn't bother looking at anything else and just use what I already had.

You are the typical and true gun nut. The same with a lot, if not most of us in CGN. I don't compete (anymore and haven't in a long, long while) so do not need the latest and greatest competition holsters, but do have some holsters specific to a make and model, as well as generic holsters in different sizes that will work for all my guns. All my mag holders are generic for high cap mags that will hold single stackers too.

I need to have at least 3 mags for each gun so yes, extra mag is an added cost. Except the FNH FNS which comes with 3 mags, so at the prices these excellent pistols are selling for, make them exceptional buys.

I’m not a real revolver fan even though I own a few. Mine are still kitted with speedloaders, custom grips and nice Alessi and DeSantis leather though!

Yeah, I suppose the P210 would be an exception but it won’t be a gun I would own myself because I won’t want to holster it either due to its beauty and thus, it’s not something I would own. But, true, horses for courses.

The FN is a very nice gun. I have access to 3 of them as my friends shoot them so it’s not something I would buy myself. All my holsters are gun specific. I don’t like, even the idea of, play when I holster a gun and moving. The dumb thing is I rarely take any of them out anyways! I get guns and gear that I want to try in IDPA but when I train with them, there’s always something that irks me so I go back to my Glocks!

Thanks guys for not flaming me on this thread. I posted in a moment of boredom!

A gun, a spare mag or two, two boxes of bullets, a few targets and a stapler are all i need to go shooting at the range. Not that expensive. Guys who complete spend a pile more on gear and ammo

I generally stick to similar platforms to lower the price. If I buy an AR15 I already have 40+ magazines, spare parts, slings etc.

If I buy a CZ 75 type pistol I already have lots of mags, holsters and parts. Same with m&ps....

I shoot them the way they leave the factory. Glock sights are they only thing I've ever changed.

I’ve tried thinking like that but I’m not the kind to buy 10 guns that are the same or similar so I don’t have parts interchangeability. I also have to equip my rifles the same way! All are set up with sling, RDS, BUIS and a WML. No exceptions! I really want another 16” AR but the same cost issue arises there except have you seen how much a T-1/2 costs these days?

Me too! All my guns are stock except for sights.

Same here... I bought a P250 and then sank another $200+ on 4 more mags. Now I am looking for a holster. Thank god I already have a few belts, mag pouches and enough 9mm stashed for now ... Now come to think of it.. I am totally ready for a P320 without investing anything further <-- ain't that a blessing or what? ;)

I'm probably a bit of an oddball here, but I only own two 9mm pistols. No other centerfire pistols. The two pistols I own are both Shadows. My main competition gun and my backup. That's it!

I go to a small friendly range where people are happy to share pistols, so I get to shoot a bunch of others. Maybe that's helping keep my safe fairly empty? It sure saves money. lol!

I am thinking about a Walther for IPSC Production Optics, but I wish there were more parts support for them in Canada. So I'm waiting to see what happens with that. If I do get a Walther, then I'll buy an extra 5 mags, spare parts, holster, etc. Yes, like you, the total cost for me would be much more than the retail price of the gun.

When you shoot your Shadows like you do, who needs another 9mm?
