The "real deal" in Haiti

People living in "these conditions" have access to welfare as well as many other things such as food banks and shelters. If you think that for one second these people have it as bad as the people of haiti then you sir are waving a flag of ignorance.

Access to social services is obviously not a viable solution then is it?

Have you been to a northern community? I have it looks like Haiti. (yes I know not all are bad but many are stunning) Most Canadians have no idea, and the solution is not money)

I have been to both, they are not even comparable. The poor of Canada are affluent compared to the poor of Haiti. I say this after spending a summer there working in a refugee camp on the haitian/dominican border............ which happened to be located in a dump, which is where 99% of the 100,000 plus living there scrounged their meals from.

Giving Aide to Haiti and other third world rat holes is not the problem. Its giving them money with out forcing them to meet mile stones socially, economically, morally and ethically. If they have a problem with money with strings attached they can goes else where for hand outs.

Our company (NEA) donates money to a group in Kenya who ours and other donations to build agriculture projects. The group is one of the largest agricultural exporters in the country, employees 1000 locals and is sustainable and would survive should the aide shut off tomorrow. Those are the projects our govt should be looking to "invest" tax dollars in.

As for the poor in Canada, social programs are part of the reason they exist......... may i even say thrive. Not that it matters for much longer. Municipalities, cities and provinces are running low on cash and soon hand outs will be slashed and people will have to learn how to be self sufficient.

For School (NOT MY PERSONAL OPINION) right now i actually have to write an essay about: Is Canada obliged to help Haiti, thought id take the hard road and say NO. EDIT: This is for philosophy so its a lil abstract.

This is a work in progress really rough draft (not near ready to be handed in)


Assignment One: Does Canada have any obligation to help Haiti?
Canada is obligated only to help Canadians; it is only morally imperative to help others outside of the Canadian social contract only if we have the appropriate means. Currently the interests of Canadians cannot be sacrificed by the Government of Canada to help external parties with out the government failing its obligation to Canadians. Canadian universal health care and social systems create a higher level of government control, and thus a greater obligation to its people. Canada is currently failing to meet its obligations to Canadians, even today as I am writing this paper Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams in having heart surgery in the United States of America. One could intelligently conclude that if a predominant politician such as a premier cannot receive appropriate medical that he is entitled to, the question of accessibility arises. “When the equivalent of a governor can’t get a specific procedure, what chance does the average Canadian have?” wrote one blogger at the right-wing site BigGovernment.com. Health care is not the only instance where Canadians suffer because of government inappropriate allocation of resources; take our national debt, Canada as a country currently spends more money they it takes in. Because we do not have enough money to fund all of our programs we must create a budget and sacrifice non-necessities. While Canadian in-house spending is being cut, foreign aid is being increased. While Canada and every developed nation does have a rational self-interest in conjunction with humanitarian interests in helping underdeveloped nations, the interests and needs of the nations citizens must be deciding factors in any policy decisions.

All i can say is wow. Sadly im not shocked by the level on stupidity that i have seen in this thread. What we all need to remember is that Haitians are people who happened to be born not where we where born. If any of us where born where they where born, we would be acting just like they are. I have been to Haiti several times in the last ten years. I know some Haitians. Some are complete a**holes and some are great friends. Just like people here. Haiti's problems, pre-earthquake, go back generations and are more complicated than there is bandwidth on this forum to tackle. The devil has nothing to do with anything, the french tradition is long gone. The problems at hand are overwhelming, and there is no practical solution. Any help is good help. The UN, whatever. It just makes me sick when some asswhipe from here (canada) who probably doesn't have a passport and who has never travelled outside of north america makes arrogant remarks with absolutely no concept of reality. If you cant say anything productive or intelligent dont show off your ignorance, keep it to your self until you have actually traveled, dealt with people, and have the ability to form a credible opinion. In a nutshell im telling the morons to shut the f**k up.

One of the really distastefull things about internet chat is that any little puke can mouth off in a manner that he would never think to if you were present. Everybody is a tough guy.

It's truly ignorant to think sending a few bucks and a Hallmark card will do anything to change a country like Haiti. I have a passport. I have not visited the entire world, but I know many who have including a close friend who does outreach work around the globe. The third world is third world for a reason. We have been showing people in Africa how to dig water wells for over a hundred years and we are still showing them. They won't do it.

My fathers crew checked into a hotel in India once. The desk clerk saw the Canadian uniforms and commented that "Canada was a very young country and that India's culture was thousands of years old". One of the other guys responded by saying "you haven't done a f$*k of a lot with it have you"

It's not my place to do the things for other people that they won't do for themselves. If you read some of my other postings you will find I question our right and obligation to interfere with other cultures. It's very arrogant of the west to assume our way is the right way. I'm not suprised we are resented for it. If all of this sounds ignorant and I'm an asswipe in your eyes please forgive me but show me enough respect to let me give my opinion.
