Brass is too brittle and not strong enough for receivers. That's why Winchester stopped using it when they discontinued the 1866 Model. Steel was becoming available in large quantities and the machinery to work it had advanced.
the gold on mine is well worn an i personaly like the way it looks , they were meant to be used you can always look at a perfect one in a museum or the like .
Personally, I like the commemoratives with the silver finish receivers as shooters. I currently have a Cowboy 20" saddle ring carbine and a Legendary Lawmen 16" trapper SRC. Both are strictly "shooters".
While I usually can't abide the gold plated commemoratives, once they get a bit of wear and start to turn silver with a bit of character on 'em I think they look kinda cool.
