These Model 700 copies are incredibly smooth. Unbelievably smooth. Why?

I don't think it's fair to call them "700 copies" as this would imply third party manufacture. 78s were produced by Remington parallel with the 700 for a few years as a more affordable alternative: I'm not sure to what extent the former was made more affordable except in stock material?

True. Identical to 700’s with the exception of subtle machine marks, no bolt jeweling and some have different bolt handles. Stocks were uncheckered hard wood in blind mag configuration.

I currently own three of those rifles. One is a custom gun in 280 Remington, one is a factory 308 that is going into a Brown Precision with the bottom getting the BDL treatment. The last is a bare 30-06 action that is awaiting assignment in the safe.

They are not very well known and can be had at a good price. IIRC, they were Remington's cheapo gun before the SPS line came out. They are very smooth and as well made as any 700 of the same time. One thing I like about them is that they have a satin finish as opposed to the high polish of the BDLs.

This one was a 35 Whelen I had for a while. Sold the bbl action and kept the Brown Precision to go with the 78 action I still have.

This is the typical bolt handle on a 78. No checkering with a different profile. I like these better than the std 700 handle.

I did get this one last year that had the std 700 handle. The bolt is numbered to the action so is as it came from the factory.

I have the standard checkered model 700 bolt handle on my 78 too

In the early '80's I bought one in 30/06. My buddy bought one at the same time and his was more accurate. Sent mine out to Ron Propp at Gibbs Rifle Products to be rechambered to .30 Gibbs and true it up. When it came back it was more accurate, 5/8" three shot groups with 180 Nosler Partitions and IMR 4831. That gun filled the freezer every fall for years. Wish I still had it.

Rem Sportsman 78's came out in the mid to late 80's for under $300.

The Bbl'd actions were not polished & bolts were not jeweled aka a BDL.

Some by the draw have the smooth bolt knobs while others have the 700 checkered handles.

For the price, the 1/2 dozen "'78 working stock" rifles in possession, have performed as advertised.
