The Remington Sportsman Model 78

Bought this Sportsman 78 in 308 last year as well as this Brown Precision stock. The stock was truly a beater. Bbl channel hogged out, finish and bedding messed up and and ADL. I sent the stock and bbl action to Mitch Kendal's stock spa and he did his magic to it. Bedding, bbl channel, opened up to BDL and refinish all done in short order. It was a lot of work.

To say I was pleased with the results would be an understatement.

I refinished mine over the holidays. It’s in 222 Rem in a Model 700 ADL stock. Shoots really well with 23gr RL7 40vmax at 2.21” OAL R-P brass.

Wood looks great (!), and in a calibre that few can deny is inheritantly accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

I've had 3 or 4 of them. Didn't find them any smoother than any other 700 of the same era. Nothing different about them other than the stamping.

That’s a shame, like the 783. I’d like one in the laminate stock and shorter barrel but nothing in a LH version. I’m done buying RH bolts for hunting, I’ve seen the light and it’s a LH bolt action for me from now on. Non hunting use I can live with a RH action I guess lol.

Nice looking stock, love the look of an oiled or matte finish on a wood stock.

I just took delivery of the "competition" - is a Winchester Model 70 "new" Westerner - so USRAC had bought production facilities - early 80's must have wanted something to compete with the Remington 78 - result was the "new" Westerner - is not the .264 Win Mag with 26" barrel - is a 22-250 with 22" barrel - about cheapest stock with stamped checkering that you can imagine.

Great looking rifle. The condition is unbelievable! It’s neat when you find a 40 year old piece new in box. Special find!!
