The restoration of Kettenkrad 116714

Dark alley Dan, just so the jitters don,t get to bad here is a little of whats in store.

Hang in there, right now with the semi return of semi decent weather the priority is the 166 and attending to its demands.

Gosh, thanks guys but that f,ing SD card is driving me crazy, seems I am finding all manner of cool stuff squirreled away over the years but the potential loss of the card is a gaping hole in the restoration timeline. Right now I have a $50 bounty posted in the household as motivation to find it.

Describe shifter...4 gears?.... Normal H pattern?...second shifter is forward reverse or high low?

How much to rent kett for 5 minute drive( just to say 'been their-done that)?

Nothing normal on a kettenkrad two shifters, the main shifter works in conjunction with the smaller, two position shifter the two position shifter in the forward position is for street and when moved to the rear for Gelande (heavy going off road) the main shifter is three postions forward and one reverse but is actually a six speed transmission as the H pattern is 1-4, 2-5 and 3-6. The kettenkrad transmission is totally non-synchroed so one does not want to miss a beat shifting. Cannot really say I seen to many kettenkrad rental places lately.

Is rev matching or double clutching difficult on a tracked vehicle?

Not really, all the principals are the same and like anything you get the hang of it and shift with your ear to engine sound-RPM-speed. My (now) 13 year old can double clutch the MB and when he turns 16 I sign over the ownership of the M38 to him so that was something we had to get taught last year. The schwimmwagen is non-synchronized also so the fun never ends.

Thanks, man. Went through some tough moments there, but at least the DT's have backed off a bit...:)

Yet more killer detail work in the cockpit area. That's some serious museum quality stuff right there. You're one of those artist/technicians that come along from time to time.

Cyclist question - what are the stamps on the saddle? Looks almost like a Brooks, but I know that can't be it...

So the turning of the handle bars on it also locks the track wheels which does most of the turning right?

Correct, if you look at the shaft with a spring around it you can see the dark grey backing plate for the steering brakes.
Dark Alley, the seat is stamped Drilastic which I believe was a subsidery of Dunlop (of Germany). I have to throw something in there about "museum grade restorations" A couple years ago I mentioned at the KKUSA meet my intent was to do a "museum grade" restoration and just about got laughed at for thinking such a crazy thought let alone saying it aloud. Club members told me to just keep doing what I do as its head and shoulders above any museum work anyways I can get my little "petting zoo" of old vehicles just the way I like and challenge myself along the way doing so. The great thing of old military vehicles is 1. they where only "factory new"......once 2. they can have that lived in/field look and still be 100% correct and 3. the vehicle, even right from the factory, could be a little rough in appearance and still be just fine.

Great stuff....i was getting a bit antsy with the lack of updates. You tell a great story!

Anyways, would it be safe to say that if the front wheel was fully removed and just the forks remained the Kett would still function fine?

Why even have a front wheel?

For those of you who want to know the details of how the KK steering works, have a look at my webpage:

http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~dgrev/dhmg/kettenkrad.html

It will save you wearing out XRCDO11 with questions that everybody asks every time a KK owner has his
vehicle on display.

The first person who says "what a stupid idea that front wheel is, only an idiot would put that on a
tracked vehicle" gets spammed until they repent! ;-0

Thanks for the link.

So in essence i was correct. If the front wheel was to be damaged and had to be removed in the field the Kett would still be able to function. As far as i understand the wheel is there only for small adjustments and for ease of driving on paved roads.

Everyone

For some reason my Aussie located website is down, please use the UK mirror

Splods site is one of the more comprehensive out there on the kettenkrad and while I am still sans SD card maybe he can post a few pics of his kett down under.

Ok, now I understand. The front wheel is for small corrections. The brake steer is for larger turns. This increases efficiency and reduces wear (on everything but the motorcycle tire which is easy to replace)

On your page you refer to the road as having chamber. I think you meant to say camber.

Very nice site. Thanks to both of you. It has been a pleasure to learn so much; not just about this cool vehicle but the techniques employed in its restoration.
