The results are almost in for the best Whitetail cartridge from Field and Stream 2011 Championship poll...

Looks like 30.06 might have her beat; 56%-43% (must be some new americun, huh math) last I checked:stirthepot2:...-

Looks to me like the Championship Poll is full of it.

I actually use a .270 as my primary deer cartridge, but that "contest" is just silly. The .30-30 is better than the .280???? The .243 wins over the 6.5 Swedish??????

Come on!

If that was the best they could come up with in the way of filler, maybe they should just put pictures of kittens in instead.

If it's gonna be fluffy filler, it may as well really be fluffy.

Cheers
Trev

OF COURSE the 30/30 is better than the 280!

i just can't figure out why that upstart 30/06 is rated so high...

mutter,mutter,mutter ... (old fart speak):D

F&S, It figures. The 30-06 is the most used cal. for all game in north america but as a whitetail round in the eastern thickets you can have it, a 30-30 is the answer, in the western open country I find my 257 weatherby the cal. of choice along with the 270, 280, 30-06, 25-06 ect. a close second. It is a personal choice that not everyone is going to agree on, but no one is wrong if you take ethical shots on game.

I didn't have to look at the poll to know the results. 30.06 does as much as all the other calibers put together. I have dozens of rifles of all different calibers, none of them can cover the spread of what the 30.06 can do. I grew up in the Northwest Territories, most homes had a 30.06, a 12 Gauge, and a .22LR, and no one ever required anything more.

as i recall these "polls" are usually based strictly on ammo sales and reloading die sales... don't know about this poll tho. in this poll there's some hunter input.

30/06 has always outsold everything in the states. i think it's a bit much for whitetails tho, but to each his own.

30/30 is almost always in the top 12 of die sales btw. maybe 303 would do well in canada, but hunters have moved away from it .

it appears deer & moose now require at least a 300 win mag due to the impervious skins they have developed over the culling of all the thin skinned deer with lighter cartridges.;)

there's always a lot of personal preference in these polls so i don't pay much attention to them.

if it was left to "what does the job" we' all have 30/06s, 308s, 303s & 30/30s.

but it would bankrupt the gun manufacturers.

interesting thread tho.

And the difference between a .270 Winchester and a .280 Remington is 0.007 of an inch.

not just

When loaded with a .284 caliber, 165 grain bullet, the 280 Remington generates 2,911 ft lbs of energy and 2,820 fps of velocity at the muzzle. The 270 winchester loaded with a 150 grain bullet develops 2,705 ft lbs of energy and 2,850 fps of velocity. The 280 Remington creates 208 ft lbs more energy at the muzzle than the 270 Winchester. When loaded with the same bullet type i.e, (soft point, polymer tip boattail, etc), the 280 generates more energy at the muzzle and downrange. The greater energy and higher Sectional Density makes the 280 Remington ballistically superior to the 270 Winchester.
