The rifle I will take to Africa.

Yup, I get it, she will be a timeless classic with a 1.5-5 on top:cool:

Hey wapitiwhacker, I just noticed the vertically split rings you have on your two rifles. I have them on my Cooper & I really DON'T like them! Terrible for trying to keep the scope level when tightening everything down, TERRIBLE!

Cheers
Jay

Jay you are making me weepy. I have 5 kids and five grandkids. Married to a good girl for 27 years (shoots a pistol better than me). I love 18 year old single malt. I have never been to Africa but have a beautiful Brno model 602 that was re-chambered from .375 H&H to .378 WBY by a gunsmith in south Africa. I killed two or three moose with it in Alberta. I also have a Elwood EPPS custom Mauser .458 Win. Mag and a custom Mauser in .450 Ackley (Straight neck and shoulder) not tapered like the Lott. I held your rifle in my hands at a gunshow in Calgary about three years ago and the guy was only asking $1500 for it (minty). Dave you bone head, why didn't you buy it, Dave. Jeeeeze

Hindsight is 20/20, there are guns I wish I had held on to or bought at the time I saw them. Keep your eyes peeled on the EE, local gun shops & gun shows... You never know when the rifle of your dreams will show up! :ar15:

Yes, they're Warne QDs. I didn't know about Alaska Arms LLC rings when I got the first set. I was going to get a pair when the .338 came along but they were sold out! While I was waiting a 30mm pair of Warne's came up on the EE for a good price so I scooped 'em up. I've been frustrated with other vertically split rings before, but the Warne's go together quite nicely. My main beef is, having them mounted on a lefty, the rear lever hits the bolt release when I rotate it for removal. I have to lift the lever every time I pass the bolt release. The AA rings with quarter turn locking would be much nicer. Maybe some day!

That rifle looks RIGHT with that scope! How is the eye relief wrt recoil? I don't wanna get scoped... Chuckle

And the wood on your rifle is beautiful!

My 416 wears a 1.5-5x Leupold. So far I haven't been scoped, with the exception of crawling the stock on a prone shot and not having it tucked right into my shoulder.

Those straight-objective Leupolds just look right on a rifle; I like them well enough that I have 2 of the 1.5-5x's, as well as a half-dozen or so of the 1-4x's.

But, having said that, I must admit that I would be more likely to put a 2-7x, 2-8x, 3-9x or some other similar type on a .375H&H. That rifle will be so versatile, so useful in so many situations, that I would prefer to have a brighter scope than the little 20mm-objective jobs. They'd also be a bit easier to use at 300-400 ranges if you like that sort of thing. The 1-4x's I have are on guns like lever-action .45-70's and .458WinMag bolt guns. I know that I might be at a mild disadvantage in low light, but the compact size and weight of these little scopes lets them sit comfortably on guns that I would otherwise not scope at all.

If you can find one, a now-discontinued Zeiss Conquest in 1.8-5.5x (objective width is around 36mm or 38mm, can't recall and too lazy to check) is also a near-perfect scope in almost any hunting scenario.

That's a problem with a rifle that might be used in an emergency when technique might be less than perfect. When I mounted my 1-4 Nightforce on the .458, in a mount that I liked very much, positioned the ocular half an inch behind the cocking piece, but I figured I'd just make sure I used good technique and there's be no problem. One day I as practicing snap shooting off hand, and sure enough, I fired a round with my shoulder relaxed, and I got tagged. Brother, with a hot loaded .458, that'll wake you up. I tore the scope off the rifle, and called Richard Near for a Pic rail and rings.

Before . . .

After . . .

That is a need a longer stock issue not a scope mount issue.

Nope, the LOP should be short on a hunting rifle, most folks use them as they come from the factory, when they should wack an inch or so off them, particularly considering they are most likely to be used in cool weather when bulky clothing is worn. You don't need a recoil pad getting hung up on your coat when you're in a hurry, and the shotgunner's technique of pushing the gun forward to mount it, then pulling it back in doesn't work for me. So because I tend to raise the rifle in close, I dislike hunting rifles with long LOPs, and prefer to cut them to 13.5". If a scope's ocular lines up well behind the cocking piece of a bolt gun that tends to jump around a mite, and the stock length fits correctly, you've set the stage for a cut.

When determining if the stock is the correct length, consider whether or not you can cycle the action without effort with the piece shouldered. The forearm and upper arms should approximately form a 90 degree angle.

I've swung 180 to your point of view, used to stock long until I tried shooting things fast / instinctively with a rifle. I gave up on my ego about a long LOP and have fully switched to a preference for 13 1/2 - 14". Throw a jacket in there from time to time as you point out and that seems the best compromise. I hit a lot better with a short LOP when instinctive shooting too.

To be fair, you've got a kinda short LOA.
