I handled the ruger American a couple times at the gun counter. I just thought they were too cheap feeling for the price. I did get my kid a 783 compact new for more than $200 less than the American price tag. The stock on the 783 feels more solid than either the American or the savage. The magazine on the 783 is the best of all the budget guns. I like the adjustable trigger. The recoil pad is nice. The only downside is the plastic moulded sling swivels.
Last weekend we had that rifle out in some very nasty blowing snow. We crawled 100 yards through the snow to get a shot. The rifle was covered in snow. Worked fine. Wiped it down when we got home and it has fared fine. No rust or blemishes.
It shoots very accurately too. I'm happy with the purchase.
If the Winchester XPR wasn't so expensive I'd have looked at it as well. But it is, so I didn't.
I think for new budget guns available right now the best value for the dollar is the 783.
