I noticed the rifle on their site.....anybody have one in the .338 Federal? I'm thinking of giving up my 700LSS in 300 ultra and going to a compact close range moose thumper (Hunt the bush now...swapped camps), and this looks like it ight be the ticket :)

How does that little 16.5" barrel affect the trajectory of the .338?

Appreciate any feedback.

WW

Trajectory is a factor of muzzle velocity. A 210 TSX would likely push 2300fps out of that barrel. Sighted 3" high at 100, zeroed at 200, would drop about 12" at 300yds...

Tod Bartell on this site speaks very highly of the 338 Fed and rightfully so.
I bought a Ruger Frontier last year and unfortunately at the time I had to settle for a 358 Win because the dealer couldn't get his hands on a 338 Fed.
The rifle is excellent, first test load with a 225 Nosler went 0.90" with a Leupold 1.5x5 and got better from there on.
That same load dropped a nice mulie @ 200 yds right in its tracks.
I haven't chronographed anything yet but it shoots 300 gr. cast bullets very well and also light 357 bullets for plinking.
As for hunting Moose in the timber, I'd have no problem with the 358.
The downside is lack of factory ammo and that is where the 338 Fed shines.
The Ruger Frontier is a nice little rifle for what it was intended....

you should be able to get about 2500 fps with a 210 gr bullet in the 338F with H4895. On the Ruger you should be able to seat the bullets out a bit and gain some case capacity there.

Barnes lists the 210 at around 2490, with their 24" barrel. I'd like to see that out of a 16"...Or maybe I wouldn't...;)

8" of barrel has to drop it at least 200fps...

I get 2630 fps with 47 grains of H4895 (with the TSX 210), my Sako has a 22.5" barrel, that same charge behind a 215 gr Sierra BTSP does 2610 fps avg. I can seat the bullet out to 2.93" OAL due to the mag, which should be about what you can do with a SA M77. I would bet on 25 f/s loss per inch, so about 150 fps..each gun will be different.

Since you're not worried about going to something new, short and weird I'd say go the new Ruger 338 RCM. 20" barrel Matt finish with sights. Very trim and quite powerfull, moreso than the Fed.
