The Ruger Mini 14 - What is wrong with it?

Thanks Guys...how do you find they shoot with surplus 7.62x39?

My stainless 581 Mini-30 really likes Czech, shoots as well as a Lee Enfield with it. Real ammo shoots best though, of course, it's much more accurate than any of the SKSs I've owned and more accurate than my CZ-858 was as well. I don't worry about the corrosive in a stainless gun.

Thanks Ardent - This is what I was thinking...the stainless parts should help with corrosive ammo. I have a full case of that stuff, and nothing to shoot it in so... :)

Minute of flowerpot (stacked close in a row) ...ie most A team episodes from the 80's.

I like the concept of them, I just never found them actually able to be reliable accuracy wise to warrent the cost.

My first SKS still shoots better then the mini 14's I have tried.

And are the factory 'target' models any more accurate than the standard model? I have always wanted one but the accuracy rumours always scared me off.

With 60gr Sierra HP's I was able to consistently group 3" 3 shot 300 yard groups with my over the counter Mini 14 Target.

Well found one locally, $800 no tax, but its the stainless synthetic one, and I figure if I was to buy one it would be the wood stocked one.

With ya, I paid $790 for the wood stocked plain jane. Did pick up an ATI stock after (I just plink and play at 100 yrds and in with her)
I've said it many times, it just has character ;)

Mine definitley doesn't meet my definition of accuracy, 4 or 5" group @ 100 yards. but it cycles awesome and and can't help but love it. As long as i can remember i always wanted one.

Accuracy (or lack thereof) is the only reason keeping me from purchasing one. There are some rifles that groups better than 4" @ 100 yards but at $800-$900 I'm not willing to take a chance. Now if I come across a used rifle that has proven to shoot well..........

Where are you in BC Stonehorse? I drive that province a lot (my in laws live there, and I work in Northeastern BC) and I am at the top of Alberta, meaning I cross most of BC at a diagonal. You'd be welcome to try mine if you have something interesting for me to shoot as well. It's box stock and if it doesn't put three rounds into 1"-1.5" for you at 100 I'll shoot it next and demonstrate you're doing something wrong. :p

Again, it comes down to what you're trying to achieve with it.

I am trying to hit a human sized target quickly from 100 yrds and in from a standing position.

That's it.

I'm not sitting locked in a bench rest trying to shoot out the right section of an eye. If that's what one is looking for, then look elsewhere ;)

For my purposes, it MORE than covers the task at hand.
6" MOA from a standing position @ 100 yrds from the down position to a single shot with a 1 second or less target acquisition would a VERY good day for me.
If one cannot hit a human sized target from 100 yrds and in standing.......with ANYTHING, then one needs to look inwards.

Under my usual conditions, it's more like 12" at 100 yrds, possibly more. Depends on how quickly I'm tyring do do it.

Conclusion: It depends what "accuracy" means to you ;)

But a mini, change the gas block bushing and then shoot decent ammo--it will work every time and hit what it needs to. If you want an moa target gun--buy one and don't slag the mini's--they do what they are supposed to do.

I'm glad to hear some members are finding the newer ones accurate.

I may get back into a Mini later on, if I can find an accurate one being sold by a member with a high trader rating.

My stainless Mini 14 ranch (180 series) averaged 4 - 5 inches at 100 yards, scoped and sandbagged off the bench, and I did try it with a few different kinds of ammo. The trigger also sucked, bad. It was a nice looking firearm however, and did go "bang" every time it was supposed to. But for $900, well, words cannot express how unimpressed I was.
