After a fall of nothing but does and one missed opportunity at a smaller buck, we gave it one more try today. Earlier this week in -40 degree temps I saw exactly nothing but with a change in the weather with slower wind speeds the deer were on the move. Mid day he followed a doe right to me grunting with every step. Even from several hundred yards you could tell his gait and attitude were keeping her glued to the does butt. An unexpected turn put them at less than 15 yards but face on. I didn't have a shot I wanted and of course that was the moment he winded me. After five or six good bounds he settled and walked slightly up a valley edge looking back at me. He only provided a spine shot but the 300 grain TC Shockwave with Buckhorn powder pushing it along made it a short tracking job. Of note, he had broken off two tines (one very recently), had a gouge in his eye that was festering and had two splits in one ear. He may not have been a Booner but apparently he had an attitude about him.
TC Omega, Bushnell 4200, Buckhorn powder and TC 300 grain shockwave. Very glad to finally have a deer for the year but also sad that it's over as there can't be may nicer days than this in the bush.
