The Shotgun In Modern Combat - Drone Defense

#7 is too small against drones used in combat.
...

Folks we are talking #7 TSS shot here. TSS shot is a completely different game than lead shot .... much denser and heavier than lead ....

I am killing Canada geese with #7 TSS shot out to 60 plus meters.

I would assume ... whatever can kill a goose ... can bring a drone down at these distances.

It's the price of that TSS shot that is the limiting factor. You get to kill a handful of geese each year. If Ukraine is anything to go by, you need to be prepared to kill dozens of drones.

Lol ... I did not know that the Geneva convention was amended with a non toxic shot requirement for drones.

Thousands and thousands of hunters killed geese with lead BB shot for decades out to 60 meters and beyond.

Forgive me if this is a newbie question, but would there be some sort of way to load tracer birdshot? I imagine it could help soldiers who aren’t shootin clays every weekend with trying to hit something like this.
Physical tracers no, but there a possibility of using hi vis paint on the shot itself or coat them in some fluorescent or shiny silver before loading. A similar fluorescent wad would help too.

Who can come up with a reliable design for a belt fed 12ga?

While we are at it .... I think we also need a new shotshell cartridge design that feeds reliably with a belt fed fully automatic ..... (y)

And why not make it a fully automatic 4 gauge belt fed machine gun ....

Hmmmm .... would that be considered a gun or artillery .... ?? :ROFLMAO:

There is no reason 12ga shells can't feed reliably from a belt now. Machine guns have been feeding rimmed cartridges perfectly well since the Maxim guns of the late 1800's.

The MK19 40mm grenade launcher is belt fed. 🤷‍♂️

A belt fed 12ga MG would seem to be a growth industry considering how modern warfare is heading.

I think you wanted to say ....

"Machine guns have been feeding brass rimmed cartridges perfectly well since the Maxim guns of the late 1800's."

So, where are the belt fed 12ga autos and that use 12ga plastic hulls?

That there are not any currently, does not mean there can't be any in the future.

The answer to your question is that such a thing has not been needed to date and so has never been made. Now there is the potential need for such a thing, there is no reason it couldn't be designed and built.

Shotshells are relatively durable and I am certain it would not take too much effort to simply make plastic hulls out of a slightly thicker plastic so as to make them even more durable. It wouldn't be rocket science.

Why do you assume brass/plastic shotshells won't feed from a belt? As IDCAY says, no one bothered to build a belt fed 12ga before because no one needed one. I expect existing 12ga shells will feed fine from a belt.

Too many jams and hang ups. Arty is the solution.

Well, I would say .... this is a nice theory that still needs to be proven.

I mean much more silly guns have been designed and put on the market than a belt fed 12ga.

(For example we have belt fed 22lr Gatling guns. What is the purpose and need for those? It is a range toy!)

I would say .... in the 170 years that the 12ga exists somebody would have come up with a design for it.
And if it is only to be a range toy ....

And so far, I am not aware that a belt fed 12ga exists .......

Now, we can argue this forever ..... and just for the sake of arguing ..... ;)

Yea ..... well let's see you carry a 40mm bofors around in the field for a day and see that goes first shall we.

So what you are saying is you haven't been paying any attention at all to what is currently going on in Ukraine?

A belt fed 12ga roughly the size of a C6 / M249 that could be pintle mounted on vehicles would be pretty good for drone defence in the battle space.

Lol ... I am wondering who came up with the idea of a 12ga belt fed machine gun for drone defense... 🤣

Oh wait ... it was a 4 gauge with a new cartridge design....
