The SIG P226 Legion: A Quick Overview

Nice write up and fantastic pictures as usual Master G. While I'm not really a fan of the marketing angle either, I can certainly see the appeal of many of the gun's features.

Thanks for the kind comments! :)

One thing that struck me when I watched the video of me shooting the Legion was how little recoil and muzzle flip there was. I'm not sure what to attribute that to...better grips, maybe?

Here's me shooting a CZ75 Pre B (all-steel of course, and with a lower bore axis) with the same ammo back in October (which at the time felt very mild)

and here's the Legion again (and the same hat, too!):

Muzzle flip is about the same in both pics. Recoil is recoil and not much you can do about it high bore axis or low. Nice control though I have to admit.

Take Care

Yes, for over travel. The P series guns already had decent triggers is my point. The Legion guns are nice enough, don't get me wrong, but they are not in a different league from the other Sig production guns.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've been very fortunate to experience a few Classic P Series guns, and I do feel the difference in the Bruce Gray trigger. For me, the trigger is worth the extra cost. The SAO version is even more awesome.

There's a big difference between a $62 trigger and a $300 US trigger job. A stock legion isn't close to a gun actually worked on by Gray.

There is. The $240 worth of labor and shipping they charge to do the work. ;)

Comparisons in the US by owners of guns Gray has worked in say the trigger in the Legion is a good value in a production run firearm.

That's what the Legion is, beyond all the marketing hype. A gun with a discounted option package.

I'll quote Massad Ayoob, "With a Bruce Gray adjustable trigger and factory action hone, the Legion is about halfway between the already-famously-smooth standard SIG trigger pull, and a custom job by a top gunsmith like Gray or Ernest Langdon." Personally, I think gun critics don't tend to be too harsh in their write ups for business reasons.

They are nice enough production guns, but you won't see a huge improvement over other guns in their class. One only needs to look at the published specs on them. They are same as any other alloy framed P22#. As far as being in the Legion, the best part is having a few cold ones and shooting the ...

Nice 10 meter target on page one of this thread.
I like most Sig products, my friend has the excellent 716 rifle. However my S&W 9mm M&P & my G17 will do everything the Legion can do, only cheaper.
How about we post fired targets from the 25 yard/25 meter line!

In the right hands most firearms will do all they need to do.

If you want to compete skill sets, I think that's another thread. I agree, I can shoot my MP or Any of my Glocks to about the same level as my Legion. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy a nicely crafted chunk of Go Bang. I have several pistol much $$$ than the Legion, and the Legion is still just a 226 with some upgrades, doesn't mean I'm going to sell my other 226.

Sheesh!!! Why do people expect us to only have one or two inexpensive functional guns?!?!?!?! WHY CANT I HAVE THEM ALL AND MIX AND MATCH AT THE RANGE!?!?!? ;)

All that said, another 300 rounds through e Legion and I'm really liking the trigger compared to my other 226. Smoother and a nicer break or so it feels to me. And I love the XRay sights! It's a great gun.

That's a good point, Backwoods. I own (and really enjoy shooting) an M&P40, and I've owned and enjoyed shooting lots of Glocks. But, as a pure shooting experience, it is more pleasant to shoot a very well made, accurate, comfortable pistol like the Legion.

I had a quick chance to try the pistol today standing, unsupported 25m as hatman1793 suggested upthread. My main range purpose was to try out my new IWI CTAR but I had a bit of time to try a few five round groups (despite not going in for cataract surgery yet :) !). The temperature was just above freezing—it was one of those cold, damp days you can get on the East Coast this time of year so not conducive to optimal shooting.

Here's the first group...not bad but not great.

I took a bit more time with the second group and was pleased with the result (size-wise, at least...I need to work on my windage!)

(as proof, here's an unedited one-cut video (three minutes long!) showing the before and after target, all five shots and the distance shot).

I'm happy with this result—my eyesight issues don't help things any so I probably can't shoot much better than this, and slow-fire at longer distances has never been my forté. The sights were well-suited, actually for longer shooting as long as I ignored the dots and focussed on keeping the front blade centred within the rear notch. Competing in smallbore rifle for the past several years has taught me to slow way down when shooting for accuracy. One thing to note—the small slide stop continues to bug—especially with gloves on. I wish they'd have kept the larger one.

To get all that slow shooting out of my system I had to finish off with something more to my pace. :)
