So yesterday Dec 20, I finally got my M14 back from the local gunsmith just in time for the end of the world. I had him "cold blue" coat my rifle and I just wanted to show you guys how she looks like now.

So this is her striped down to show the "blued' finished parts.

We can see how the gunsmith did a fine job making those "tool mark" swirls most Norc M14 are notorious for, disappear and all she has now is a smooth blue skin.

Upon close up we can still see stuff that looks like rust in the crevices but is actually "sediment" from the "bluing tank", these were deal with a q-tip dipped with CLP and wiped down.

I also did my part on the original Norinco stock by spray painting it with flat black Krylon Fusion Textured plastic paint just to give it a more rough surface almost similar to the Springfield M1A synthetic stock.

Paint dried but still taped.

Tape removed, notice I have also replaced the metal butt plate and installed a rubber butt pad similar to what the M1A has.

Upon re-assembly, I installed a recoil buffer from Buffer Tech and replaced the rod spring guided with a round one from S&J Hardware.

...and now the fusion of stock and rifle!

...and some more close ups together with a deep blued Taiwanese made mag from KeepShooting.com, these we a gift to me by my American father-in-law and they are actually 20 rounders that I had to pin myself to make them legal 5 rounders.

So today 21 Dec (failed end of the world), I took her out to the range for a quick zeroing shoot, and yeah I said quick because the gunfire sound could alert and attract zombies towards where I was!

First 2 rounds didnt hit the gong so I had to stop and re-adjust elevation. One stoppage on the standing position dammit!

...and finally heres my lousy attempt of a CQB shoot using an M14, really sloooow but at least no stoppage, overall I am happy with my "coolified" rifle. ;)

Yes, I would second no tape, but great work overall.
Thanks for the detailed photos and writeup.
A Turner AWS sling would be just right here I think.
I particularly like the finish in this photo.
That turned out just right.

Great job on the blueing. Really makes it your own M14. It makes it look finished. I had a Garand totally stripped, bead blasted and blued up at Epps during a rebuild. At first I thought it was going to be a bad idea. I'm glad I took the gunsmiths advice.

Get rid of the recoil buffer.............not needed and I have seen them be the cause of malfunctions.............they're just snake oil........ ;)

I have fired 200 rds after this process with the buffer inside and so far the only one stoppage I had was that one in the video during zeroing.

That said I still consider the buffer an expendable part and, guaranteed will be the first to go once I start getting more stoppages ;)

Yep I agree, bluing this terribly surfaced Norc was something I found really significant and not just for improving its looks.

It is now even easier to clean and wipe down, and more user hands friendly :D

Indeed Im very happy with the blued finish of the muzzle and barrel, the surface actually looks more like a real USGI M14.

The original Norc parkerized finish was just too rough.

An AWS sling will have to wait though cause it seems I will have to save up for a new set of rear sights first ;)

That recoil buffer will cause yer #### to fall off!

Great looking rig I have to say!

Grease up those op rod tracks and bolt lugs and bolt raceways! More cool factor! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Who did the Blued finish for you on this Norc?

Dan Steel from Pickton, Ontario.

Hes a very well known gunsmith and firearms training instructor here at the Trenton area.

He also advised me to get a small bottle of Birchwood-Casey liquid gun blue just in case I need to make touch ups on areas that would usually wear out the coating in due time.

Done Drill Sergeant!

..and I even used original Lubriplate 130-A for them parts, including the trigger assembly...applied em a little thick...fired 80 rounds, then wiped off any excess. A thin coating of Mil spec CLP was applied all over her for overall protection.

Now shes lubed, greased and zeroed (but no zombie to kill, no thankyou Dec 21!)
