Hi fellow forum folks,

I am on the hunt for an older Canadian or American made single shot shotgun in 12, 20, or 410 gauge for my bird hunting needs. I intend to also maintain it as best as I can and eventually pass it down to my son. Any recommendations on specific shotties that can facilitate this and last the test of time? Any and all info and suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you. Cheers!

An H&R single shot are a nice inexpensive break action shot gun. I picked up an older 12g on the EE a while back and it has the case color receiver on it and is quite nice. The newer ones in blue or stainless(?) are great as well. Not too much to go wrong with these.

A well cared for Cooey 84 comes to mind. Nothing more Canadian than a Cooey

I agree with 1963beretta ,,,,It can not get any better than a well cared for Model 84 Cooey . It's design will give you
TWO lifetimes of good service & work as good as any other make & Cooey is the # 1 All Canadian Company since 1919 .

Canadian made equals Cooey model 84. A nice example will serve you well and you will be passing down a piece of Canadian history. You could also look for a nice Iver Johnson Champion that Cooey finished and assembled under contract for them.

The Cooey Model 84 shotguns are great, but a Winchester Model 370 ,37A or a Winchester/Cooey Model 840 are all made in Canada ,at the same plant the Model 84 was made at and are ,if not quite the quality of the Model 84,good serviceable firearms.:)

20g Cooey

Heres mine. My grandfather gave it to me.

As a comment on durability -
I have seen way more H & R Model 48 Topper shotguns that are loose and off face, than Cooeys, by far.
Cooey Model 84 is a more durable gun, with all steel/iron parts. The most frequent problem to look out for is a weak forend spring.
The Model 840 Winchester Cooey was made cheaper by having a pot metal opening lever, a plastic forend spacer and a Beech wood stock. The forend spacer is easily replaced with a metal one. The newer forend latch is a significant improvement. Later Model 840s had a semi-beavertail forend that gives a better grip.
Either Cooey just seems to last forever, unless neglected or abused.

Cooey or CIL; nice ones can be found at many gun shows. Canadian as it gets; and well made guns! Try posting WTB adds on the EE.

I had a feeling that Cooey was the way to go and after reading every single reply post from our community here I have made up my mind. Thank you all for your insight and experience.

As far as quality a Winchester steel built 37 wins hands down over all mentioned but not Canadian built .machined choke instead of swaged. Makes for better patters

Any suggestions for a hammerless single shot? Older would be better....

Baikal makes a good one. Look for a CCCP built version. Lot's of cool features including a bushed firing pin, ability to store uncocked and some models have select ejector or extractor. Chrome lined bore is a nice feature also. Recent models have screw in chokes. Like I said a lot of gun for the money.
