Dannyp had a good idea in another thread, talking about testing the SKS's accuracy. A bit of an accuracy challenge but also a shooter's challenge.

The goal is to shoot the SKS as it was built and intended to be shot and show what its capable of. It is a friendly challenge.

"RULES"

-Distance is 100m
-Groups MUST BE of at least 5 rounds or more
-No lead slead
-Surplus Ammo
-Post pictures of groups/rifle/ammo
-Use the target you want
-Front sandbag and slings are authorized

"CATEGORIES"

-Stock form (wood stock and iron sights)
-Tactical (any other stock + optics)
-Others (heavily modified, bedded in, recrowned, rebarreled etc)

Here is the way I will conduct my challenge:

-Unsupported prone shooting: 5 groups
-Sitting: 2 groups
-Kneeling: 2 groups
-Standind: 2 groups

I'll use a russian SKS with Chinese copperwashed surplus ammo (i found it to be very consistant and the most accurate out of other of my rifles. And I might or not use a sling.

I should do it either on July 19th or 26th

I will do my part the first of the week. My daughter has a weekend long softball tournament I can't miss.
It's going to be fun.
Thanks DT471 for getting this kicked off.

This will be a good chance for all of you guys to beat the crap out of me for all my mouthing off :)
I'm not a great shot and brutally honest so there will be no cheating from me.

Ill get in on this too but probably not till next weekend.
I have a good condition 53 tula refurb and a factory 26 1.5 million series chinese.

Ammo makes a big difference , for me the most accurate stuff was the czech on stripper clips (green case, light blue cardboard box).
I have some old russian surplus 1951 era that is pure crap. Brass plated steel cases. Out of five shots 2 would go fairly straight and three flyers would be almost 12" apart( and thats at 50 yards). the cases would be some times be burnt through on the sides .

Also have some copper wash chinese that will try out

I will try and get on this next weekend, Would we need to use separate targets for each group, or use one for everything?

So, a stock SKS with the iron sights, original stock and bayonet on there, shooting surplus ammo, at 100m, 5 shot groups shot standing?

Better have a BIG target and a yardstick to measure the groups!

Cz surplus out of a yugo sks is probably the only way to shoot anything decent that way

5 x 5 shot groups are done in the prone
Then its 2 x 5 shots groups in the sitting/kneeling/standing, and no need for a bigger target than a empty case of 24 ;)

I'll use a big appliance box for my 5 groups and smaller green cardboard from the dollar store for the kneeling/sitting/standing. Might use 5 sheets of paper with a post it note in the center if my SKS is somewhat accurate too, i'll see at the range.

Ok - I'm in, what size target and what distance?

Any size target you want, 100m as per main title

Here's my results for this challenge. Groups shot at 100m using Romanian 7.62x39 surplus ammo , I was standing with front of the rifle rested on box rail of my truck for the 2 Canadaammo targets and standing free hand/off hand for the yellow savage target.
I shot about 4 groups of 5 and 1 group of 10+1 (first shot as a fouler/warmer then 10). The 4 , 5 shot groups were done about 5 mins apart from each other and I rested front of rifle on my truck box rail as I was standing. The 10+1 group was done free hand/off hand standing. I have pictured below my BEST and WORST group and my 10+1 group.
I picked my best shooting sks for the challenge , its a mix matched Russian that I pieced together using a good barrel , my best feeling trigger , a tight fit to the stock and I have a utg buttpad on strictly for length of pull and not the hellish recoil LOL. I measure my groups outside of hole to outside of hole, if you measure center to center that's cool but I like outside to outside even if it is a fraction off to some. Best group was 3 1/2'' and worst was 6 3/4'' for 5 shot groups and the 10+1 was 7 1/2'' group. Here are the pics:

Thats some great shooting using only SKS irons!

Perfect day , rain had just passed and sun came out. No wind and no one but me there. Full concentration on a rifle I shoot with often.
Practice and being in tune with the rifle you're using help a lot. The best group I have shot ever from the rifle was 3 1/4 inch at 100m using Czech surplus. I haven't done better since. Its usually a 4-8 inch group at 100m with her though. Good for me and typical for a Sks IMHO. They aren't tack drivers but they aren't too bad at all.
I have a Yugo now that shoots consistent 5-6 inch groups but no better. This Russian is my best shooter I have found. Mix match of good Russian parts and tight stock fit.

Thanks Cam. Good day shooting for sure. Like I say it's a good shooting SKS and I use her a lot. I always shoot Czech or Romanian surplus and it likes both. I have shot MFS and a bit of Chinese out of it once with sub par results , so I try and stick to the Czech or Romanian surplus as much as possible. Somewhat stocked in both especially the Romanian.
