THE SKS 100m Accuracy Challenge

Looking forward to trying this. I bought a SKS from Canadian Tire to build it into a Benchrest SKS as a joke for some members in one of the clubs I shoot at. Haven't done any work yet so hit the range today to sight it in. Set a target up at 100 yards and it wasn't even on paper.

Two rounds key holed through the target which was disappointing. Fired 36 rounds total, 24 on paper and two of the 24 key holed. That's 8% hits on paper key holing with Barnual 123 gr FMJ.

Sounds like you got a bunk Sks there honestly. How does the crown look on it?
I'd see if Cantire will let you swap it out for another.

Crown looks fine. Percentage has me confused, lower and I would blame the ammo, higher and I would blame a defect in the rifle. When I got the rifle I cleaned in just enough to be safe to fire but it didn't get a thorough scrubbing.

I have never shot barnaul so can't comment on that ammo. I have shot MFS and it was sub par in my rifle. Maybe try a decent surplus like Czech or Romanian and see how that does.
Any poor or miscut rifling when you look through the bore? I had a Sks a while back that I had to return , rifling was miscut and it wouldn't group at all , lots of huge flyers from it. Crown wasn't the best on it either.

No defect in the barrel or crown that I can see. I started another thread about the rifle so this one can focus on the challenge. Hope to hit the range this week. Regardless of the rifles performance I'll try the challenge and see how I do. Not too concerned if the rifle is not a shooter.

Very nice shooting "sigrunes".
I noticed you removed the bayonet. Did that improve accuracy? Is that why you removed it?

I didn't remove it strictly for that purpose and not totally sure if it helps accuracy. I removed it to drop a bit of weight and the rifle is strictly a shooter , no collectabillity factor.

I haven't completed the challenge. The range I was at doesn't permit prone, sitting or kneeling. I managed to get out and fire a few groups. Fired a total of eight 5 round groups. These are a selection of them.

First group was 5 rounds off a bench using a front rest. Ammo was Barnual 123 gr FMJ. This group actually sucks when compared to my groups off the bench without a rest.

This group was off the bench without a rest, only my elbows on the bench. Ammo was Barnual 123 gr FMJ. This was my third group without the rest. I noticed that when I hold the stock with my support hands in the grooves on the stock the Tapco magazine rests on my forearm and I have a tendancy to cant the rifle. This group I pushed my support hand out further to avoid canting the rifle.

This group was standing offhand without a sling. Ammo was MFS 123 gr FMJ. Need more practice.

First ten shots out of my new SKS...shows promise. I'll be doing the 100m challenge first weekend in august.

Oooops. 67 yards in sitting position. Was screwing around with the sights so I got two different groups. Nirinco silver box

Have to build a sight adjustment tool.

Similar to this ^^ fellow, I did the challenge today and will post pics "........................................"
No need to get your hopes up though, all I managed was a 7.5 inch group of ten with my 1954 refurb Izhevsk:(

Rob that should be cause for celebration.

Well, thank you, I think  Last year I managed to get a few five inch groups under the same conditions with my 1950 Tula that I had
spent a lot of time shooting with. That SKS is now elsewhere and my shooting time has fallen sharply in comparision with last year.:(
