THE SKS 100m Accuracy Challenge

I shot a few groups today.
The bench rested ones averaged about 6.5 inches.

Is a gentle trigger tune up allowed? My trigger must be about 15 lb!

I would have liked to do this about 20 years ago, when my eyes were 20 years younger...

Nobody is going to believe this so I intend on providing video evidence. I shot the sks yesterday and it was grouping excellent at 100 yards. Just for fun, I attempted a 12 " gong set at 345 yards. Surplus ammo, open sights, SKS using a shooting rest. SMACKING the gong regularly!

That's all I want. An SKS that can do that. Twelve inch targets at 300m are exactly what it was built to do.

My son and I went out today to try the gong again. We both have 1954 Russian SKS with Tapco furniture. I figured I must have a Super special SKS and there was no way his was going to come close at the 345 yard gong. I was wrong....we both were ringin the gong and I took a few videos of our setup. I'll post em up in a new thread when I get a chance. Didn't mean to hijack this thread, so I'll also post our 100 yard groups as well.

I went out twice to the range this weekend and did it but I'm gonna redo it this weekend. The target was unfit for this test. I'm gonna go paper target shopping to get a propper target that I can see with irons at 100 and that I can re acquire the exact point of aim with each shot. I was using black bullseye on white and thats easy to see at 100 untill the black front post blends in and you can't if your sighting the same spot or not the results are not so good. So I think I know exactly what target will work. Get a bigger 200 yard target with the big bulseye in the middle and the smaller ones in the corners should be just visible through irons at 100 to re acquire point of aim.

My ghost ring just came in the mail too that should make it easier to see.

Have to re-do mine for the same reason (bad choice of target). I had 3-4" wide grouping but 6-7" vertical string due to the switching of my point of aim

I've found medium blue squares or circles , I use 10 inch aiming points , are a lot easier to see clearly when using iron sights . I read about it in Rifle or Handloader years ago . It works really well for me and my mid fifties eyesight , and I usually get between 3 and 5 inch , 100 yard , groups out of most of the various SKS's I've owned , depending on ammo .

Did the shots this weekend, now have to find time to sort and measure the wholes :). Found that I need to be more diverse in my shooting habits - too much sitting, never tried knee or stand, and did not shoot prone for ages... So after the challenge, stayed for some more time to practice.

Also, need better more contrast targets. Had to put extra objects on mine to make it more visible. Need something like Russian military "Target N 4"...

Here it is.
SKS Tula 1950, original configuration, Czech surplus ammo.
All groups are 5 shots, all use sling, all do not use any other supports.

Results are pretty dismal - still too many fliers. Even with some good groupings, there is usually a flier or two screwing the score. And with bad groupings, fliers went beyond the target, nullifying the score. Also, easy to see which shooting positions need way more practice :)

Scores, measured in inches between the outsides of two most distant holes (where I could see all 5 holes, or, just for curiocity, at least 4 holes):

knee1 - 0 (only one in target)
knee2 - 0 (only 4 holes in target, group by 4 is 10.25 in)

prone1 - 0 (only 3 in target)
prone2 - 0 (only 4 holes in target, group by 4 is 5.0 in)
prone3 - 0 (only 4 holes in target, group by 4 is 8.4 in)
prone4 - 4.75 in
prone5 - 6.25 in

sit1 - 7.75 in
sit2 - 3.25 in

stand1 - 0 (only 3 in target)
stand2 - 16.25 in

Finally - thanks a lot for the idea of a challenge! This was a lot of fun, and leared sometging in the process!

well,,,I did not do the challenge as I just found the thread but I have been working on 1954r and the results are surprising , I don't mean to hijack the Challenge , I just what to show how some things can improve accuracy .

I won't intrude again .............

I am still tinkering with it ,, so all my friends who enjoy their SKS's , there is a lot of accuracy in these guns , the trick is to squeeze it out of them.
1- Tapco stock'..Used
2-Mag Wedge Gen 2.5 new ,,, Best scope mount I have tried on my SKS .
3- Vortex 4 X 12 40mm
4- low cost bi pod
5- I re crowned the muzzle ( 1/4 inch Brass bolt , and Valve lapping compound ,and a electric drill , 4 zero steel wool to finish . The groups were reduced by 50 % compared to before the re crown.
6 - Home made Muzzle break ( I see a big improvement with it on vs when it is not on )
7 - cleaned and polished and lubed the inside .
8- ran jeweller rouge on patch through the barrel , till it had a bright shine .
9- Romanian 7.62x39 surplus ammo

both 2 targets were at 100 yards .. First target was a zombie , first 2 shots low left , re adjusted scope higher and to the right , 8 shot group .

second target 2 pic ,,, 7 shots , aim point was green square a bit higher up I shot for group , did not adjust scope /

Great post.

Very nice , just goes to show a sks can be somewhat accurate. I have got some decent groups out of a few of my sks rifles (results of one posted earlier in this thread). A couple of sks I have are decently consistent too , but groups do open up as they get hot.

You'll still always get the guy who says they can't hit the broad side of a barn with one but either they got a bunk rifle or they need to do a little work to their rifle or their shooting skills lol. Also its a battle rifle not a precision rifle , that must be remembered. Finally , you get the guy who says , I cant hit anything with mine but he doesn't even own a front sight adjusting tool lol , they don't just come already perfectly sighted in most of the time ffs.

Shot this a couple of years ago. Scoped SKS. I bet I can do better with one of my new set ups. This one was just cobbled together with a plastic shell deflecter taped on Laugh2
