The SKS (Samozaryadny Karabina Sistemy Simonova) was first produced in the Soviet Union in 1945 to replace the Mosin Nagant and SVT40 rifles fielded by Soviet troops in the Second World War. Obsolete by the time it was developed and adopted, the SKS was quickly replaced by the venerable and more useful AK47. It was then sold off to many countries in good standing with the USSR and became a popular firearm for insurgency forces during the Cold War.

It saw its most widespread use during the Vietnam War, where it proved to be quite an effective and reliable firearm in the humidity of the unforgiving jungle. Fast forward to today, with over 2.7 million units produced by the Soviets alone (not including Chinese licensed copies), it finds itself comfortably in the hands of everyday Canadian sport shooters and hunters to give it a final, peaceful resting place to live out its final days.
