The SKS bug (Or: Call a doctor, I'm bitten!)

So I've been bitten by the SKS bug, I've bought two so far, and enough ammo to invade a small bananna producing nation...

First was a Marstar Chinese Army surplus (Unforuntately only bought a few weeks before they starting offering them for $75) second, was a refurb russian from TradeEx...

Didn't appreciate exactly what sort of shape the Chinese army surplus models were in until I received the second one... I knew it was functionally "new", but it was (in my oppinion) decently manufactured as well, very few tool marks, all components operated very smoothly... versus my second SKS, all sorts of tool marks (I'm not a machinist by trade, but I do end up doing a moderate amount of metal work, and having a fair bit more done for me... I shudder at the mess left from milling on my russian SKS) not to mention the mess I presume was left from removing rust during refinishing... the action need to be worked a few dozen times to loosen up, and I still need to yank on the mag release good and hard to get it to open.... but still quite a functional action...

Within the next month or so, I've budgeted for a second chinese SKS, and a laminated stock russian (current one is hardwood), and probably a second gun safe to fit them all...

The question is, what's next? Aside from russian/chinese SKS's, what's my best source domestically for somthing else? I realise the cost is going to go up for other nationalities, but I'm figuring I should be able to find somthing in the $300 range?

I'm kicking myself in the rear for not picking up the Rasheed that was sold by one of the Canadian Gun Nutz vendors in a recent "used guns" posting... I realise it's not an SKS, and the only "commonality" is the round, but I'd be willing to include it in my collection, as it's a contemporary of the SKS, and looks similar with the same round...

Dude...there are so many more Russian milsurps out there. Have you checked out all the different russians yet? A moisin nagant and SVT-40 are on my list...and a TT33 Tokarev just for kicks, plus you could probably find a very poor condition SVT-40 or SKS and modify it to look like an SVD. My first SKS is coming and I can't wait to strip it down and giver a bath :D

I know the feeling man. My Norinco military SKS is a blast, I think a Russian one is in the cards for me soon. After that, maybe more.

Some people dismiss the SKS as commie crap, to which I used to respond with "Nothing wrong with owning an SKS, man."

I've convinced most of these people now, but soon I have a feeling I'll have to convince them that there's nothing wrong with owning three or four. :p

Get a Russian. A nice laminate stock is a thing of beauty.
And, quite frankly, there is no more reliable semi-auto in the world. They are simple and rugged. My two have NEVER had a failure. Such cool looking guns too...

Nice russians Izzy and Tula slightly refurb are out there, plus for now you cant find them anywere but the Yugo 59-66 with the tiger strip wood, i bought 3 of them 10 years ago, when they showed back again make sure to get a couple, those are the best shooters... JP.

I just picked up a sks-d with two short detachable mags, its hung on the wall as I got it in unfired condition, should I keep it unfired or have at er? Don't know much about what I bought, so enlighten me.

The sks is the only milsurp rifle i like, being a young fella and all i like the look of black rifles better.I love my sks and im keeping the wood and upgrading a few little things that will actually improve it like adding tech-sights.

I plan to buy a russian in the future just to collect.I dont see the appeal of the -D it just takes ak47 mags, im happy with my tapco.

An SKS-D is in the cards, next purchase maybe... would have been bought already, but picked up a 52/57 instead...

I know it's late, but here's a pic of the "kids' as promised.

First, Chinese SKS from Marstar, the spike bayonet is removed at the moment, would have reattached for the pic, but it's in the back of the closet, behind a great deal of junk.

Followed by a Russian with a hardwood stock, then my new 52/57 (Which I realise isn't an SKS, but it's in the same general category), and then my laminate stock Russian.

Future purchase plans are another chinese, an SKS-D (Or M, maybe both), and an Albanian when/if marstar gets them in. Would love to get a rasheed as well if one comes up for sale.
