The SKS just became a moose rifle

I have a little mini-mauser in 7.62x39 and the Ruger mini-30. The ruger uses a 308 barrel, the mauser a .311.

The Ruger gets much better accuracy that I would have hoped. About 2". The mauser about 1.5"

I load 150 gr round nose bullets in both, to about 2200 fps for decent penetration in a deer.

I was about to test it on a deer but he jumped like a rocket when he heard the Ruger safety click off.

I can't imagine this caliber, with any bullet, being adequate for a moose, except for very close range with very carefully placed shots.

a 150 gr 6.5mm TSX would be as long as a pencil, probably would not stabilize in most barrels even a 1:8 twist

it was a typo, supposed to say 7.7mm

It's really too bad that this so predictably became a re-hash of a tired and pointless "Is <insert here> big enough for <insert here>?" discussion.

I was very happy to finally see a quality commercial bullet made available for the 0.311-312" bore. I'll use in in my 303 Brit loads, and it will be a great addition for those using an SKS or anything else in 7.62x39, or the 7.62x54R (Mosin Nagants) for that matter, any 30 cal with a fat bore.

Apparently federal will be loading 7.62 x39 TSX ammo, and naming it "The Ultimate Low Recoil Moose Cartridge"

Good luck getting this load in Canada.the U.S stopped exporting all 7.62X39 to eveyone including Canada. This means no more factory Rem,Federal,or Winchester hunting ammo.We can get it from other countries, but it is .311,and not for the Mini-30.

You shoot them out of yours.I think I will stick to .30 cal stuff in mine.

Alrighty I shall, Ruger purpose designed the Mini-30 to fire either .308" or .311" with a forcing cone ahead of the chamber to swag bullets fired in it to bore size. Kinda the whole point of the Mini-30 in the eyes of most owners, cheap ammo... To each their own I suppose.

Apparently Federal has obtained a variance, due to the cartridges clearly being "sporting" as opposed ot military in nature.

My Ruger specifically stated I can use 7.62x39 ammo in it, but I should handload with 308 bullets. Makes sense to me.

I have a .318 8x57 commercial sporter. Same thing. It has a long throat and can digest the 323 bullets, although I prefer to handload with the .318s.

All sporting 7.62X39 has been banned for export by the U.S,as well as military.

I just got off the phone with a Federal rep I know. Federal has got around it by having a Canadian contractor make the ammo for them. They are very eager to introduce this to the Canadian market, as they want Canadian hunters to use it on moose...
