It all started one cold Saturday morning approx. a month or more ago. It was to cold to go shooting so I was sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. On the third cup of coffee I suddenly remembered that my buddy a week earlier had suggested we go for a drive about an hour away from us and check out a gun shop located there.

I phone him up and he agrees to go so an hour later we are on the way. When we get to the shop he asks the fellow who owns the shop if he has any Marlin rifles for sale. The fellow replies that he has nothing at the moment. He then turns to me and asks me if there is anything I am looking for. With no expectations I tell him I am always on the lookout for Smith & Wesson Revolvers.

He says, I happen to have a used one that he is selling for a fellow. He asks if I would like to see it, what the heck I say, sure why not. What is it I ask? He says nothing special just a 357 mag. He heads off to the back of the store to find it.

A few minutes later he shows up with a S&W 586 with a 4 inch barrel. I say to him Oh it is a prohib. He replies that no it has been changed to a restricted gun. My interest is peaked a little but not a whole lot as I am not into modified guns.

I take a very close look at the gun and I say to him this gun has not had the barrel changed. He replies no. He should have said that the gun has been reclassified because the barrel is actually 4.2 inches so that it could be classed as a restricted.

Well I have heard of these guns being out there and I have read about them but I have never seen one before let alone had the chance to buy one. To make a long story short I made a deal with him and paid him for it.

Now the rest of the story. He starts the transfer and it gets fired off to the registry in Ottawa because they don't believe it. It takes about three weeks to get that all taken care of and the lady finally phones me from the firearms centre and says everything is in order you can go pick up your S&W 686. Yes that's right you heard it she says 686.

After I get done assuring her that it is a 586 and not a 686 we are back at square one. Well the day finally came and it is home now Before this I had never saw one of these S&W Unicorns but had only read and hear about them. I can now say, not only have I seen one but I now own one.

I guess you never know when it is going to be your day. This gun as you can see has almost never been fired.

Man I love those blued S&W's. Too bad so many of them are unobtainium because of 0.1 inches. (Bastards) Lucky you for finding one just long enough!

Congrats! I've always wanted one my self, the closest I've come was a m66 that was a hair short. Beautiful pistol and a rare bird. Congrats again on the great find, well worth the hour drive eh for every time that trip to a new shop doesn't pay off there's always the one time it does.

So would you trade for a really nice Colt King Cobra? Not many I would trade her away for, but that is certainly one!

I am smart enough to never say never but at this point in time it would have to be something very special or something that I really wanted to let it go.

As I said before I have never even seen one before, only heard about them until now.

These are indeed the unicorns of the Canadian revolver market. Thank you for providing photos of the sighting.

Is there any way to look into how many are in circulation?
