Its kind of neat as a hunter to run in to weird little situations in the bush. Sitting still for a while brings all kinds of surprises. I've seen nest of mice come alive, birds doing weird things - hanging upside down comes to mind, fish swimming right to the shore - that kind of thing. I had another weird experience recently, or at least something that I've never witnessed or heard of before.

So this was in the north Okanagan area just after day break out deer hunting. We had left the truck out of site and walked into a big block that we had seen good sign in the day before. My friend veered off the road to work the tree line and I continued down the road to see if he jumped anything in my direction. Didn't happen so I continued on another km or so to a cross roads of trails that we found the day before as planned. I set up there and followed our plan where we'd both still hunt for an hour or so and he'd come pick me up.

Found a great spot up against a bank in some brush where I could see more than 180 degrees and down both triails with fresh sign. Waited. Waited. About a half an hour later I started calling. Used both a doe in estrus bleat and a grunt tube - two or three of each and than kept quiet for another 10 minutes.

I had done a couple of cycles of this kind of calling but saw nor heard nothing. All of the sudden something caught my eye to the left. WTF?? a coyote trotting up the trail right towards me. I thought about shooting him but I was still convinced I had a chance at a deer so I didn't. He kept comming and at about 30 yds I figured I should get his attention before he was in my lap  I leaned forward quietly jerked my head towards him quickly and gave him my best "Here's Johnny" look. He stopped in his tracks hesitated a half a second and almost did a back flip as he bolted for all he was worth back trail.

Little prick, trying to ruin my morning hunt I was thinking... and all of the sudden the breeze blew in this gag a maggot stink up wind from where Mr. coyote had been!:puke: Never seen (smelled) that before! Not as bad as a skunk but little buddy musted something pretty close!

Anyone seen that before? I've has similar experiences with dogs that get scared and let a bit of must go but nothing like that coyote!

I've seen dogs let loose when they get excited as puppies...

But to scare the 'yote that bad... Must have been one NASTY look!!!

Its a natural response. Dogs do it too sometimes when they get scared ####less.
They express glands on the side of their rectum. Its called anal glands. Those glands usually smell pretty bad. Something like a combination of rotting fish with sulpha acid.

Garbage bear?

Nope. I shot him on a honey farm near Falher Alberta. He ran into a small bush and I could smell him before I could see him.

I didn't think that a smell could be so bad that it made your guts churn. I really thought I might throw up. I left him there and we burned him later.

I shot him because he was standing outside a bus shelter (one of those little playhouse things that farmers put out for their kids at the end of the driveway so they can wait for the school bus)......the kid was inside.

No threads about "bear wants to go to school, shot by hunter....etc" please.

Hah! Good story! not everyday you scare a predator into crapsville with just a look!

On a side note, did you see any coyote tracks on the trail before you stopped there? And did you see any deer nearby after you saw the coyote?

I have seen some predator tracks in one of my hunting locations and since the wolves showed up I have yet to see a deer.

No and no.

There was a pretty stiff frost that morning and only patchy skiffs of crutsted snow so seeing a yotes tracks would be difficult though if not impossible. Didn't see any coyote sign at all the day before either when tracking conditions were really good. I'm thinking the bleating and grunting called the coyote in from a ways away to see if by chance there was an opportunity for a meal somehow...

No deer showed that morning either on these two trails at least. Headed to another area in the afternoon as I was thinking that spot was screwed for a while...
