The T97 Thread!

Buddy of mine just picked up a t97ftu on sale for 1100. Got a chance to compare it to my Tavor and I gotta say, besides the ergonomics it's a great little rifle and I can shoot just as well as my Tavor. Almost makes me second guess if the Tavor is worth the extra cash...ALMOST

T-97 failure to fire

I just got my used t-97, I was told by the seller that it had never been fired. When I went to shoot it this weekend nothing happened when I pulled the trigger. Looking at the rounds that I manually extracted it looks like the firing pin is making very light strikes on the primers, but not enough to ignite them. I tried using brass norinco rounds and Hornady rounds as well. Has anyone else had this issue or any recommendations on a solution?

Thanks!

When you #### the rifle and pull the trigger, the hammer slams forward, right? Or does nothing happen?

First thing is to take a look at the firing pin.
Take the bolt head and see how much the firing pin protrudes. Does it look like enough? Is there maybe an obstruction?
Hold the bolt head vertically, face down. Push up on the firing pin. Does it drop back down right away? (It should) Is there resistance?

To take the firing pin out, you have to hammer out a roll pin. On the top of the bolt, there are two pins that overlap. The small one holds in the firing pin. The required punch is included in the cleaning kit in the pistol grip. Make sure the firing pin isn't broken. Use Q tips to clean out the firing pin channel.

The firing pin has been parkerized which is not optimal but does not normally cause problems. Maybe try carefully removing some from the high points below the tip.

Strange. Never heard of that. Nothing happened?

If there is no audible click from the striker dropping then it might not be held back properly by the trigger unit. If there is a click, you either have a firing pin issue or aren't fully in battery. Are you releasing the bolt and letting it drop home? Don't baby it and slowly release. The final bolt rotation takes a little bit of force.

This. I had a friend shoot mine last year. He was in the firing lane two slots down from me. He came over all huffing and puffing saying "your crappy Chinese gun doesn't shoot".

I go over and sure enough, he was riding the charging handle/bolt forward. I wanted to slap him. Once he started letting the bolt go free, it wasn't a problem.

Sorry, it does #### and click but the round doesn't go off. The firing pin moves freely but only protrudes maybe 1/16". Is that comparable to a functioning rifle?

Thanks!

Mine doesn't seem to stick out far on either one. Seems like a weird problem. Does it have any issue with the striker spring? That's what applies the force onto your firing pin.

So if it's in battery itl either be a striker issue or firing pin issue.

Because you can drop the hammer before the bolt is in battery (it wont fire, but the hammer will drop) it really does sound like it might be out of battery. Its really hard to tell without being able to examine it.
