Very interesting! Sir Charles Tupper is an ancestor on my wife's side of the family.
There's a large public service building in Ottawa named after him.
cool find. The pipe appears to be made of wood (beech?) but what is that braided cloth bit in the stem? (I used to smoke a pipe. Found it to be hell on my teeth not to mention lungs, enjoyed it all the same.)
A tip...my grandfather (may he rest) was an almost lifelong pipe smoker. Whenever he bought a new pipe he would "season" the bowl with honey. A finger full, rub it into the wood (or corncob {he bought/made a new one of those every year}), stuff the bowl with tobacco and smoke away. He said the burnt sugars in the honey slowed the burn out rate and insulated the wood from the tobacco. (nothing worse than "smoking" walnut)
I would think a spring in the stem a pain in the ass. One would have to hold the bowl (which can get surprisingly hot) to avoid spilling (which is also surprisingly hot!)
