Was out shooting some skeet & 5-stand on Sunday and we had a new shooter join us. He was a young, enthusiastic fellow who was asking for input as he was trying out his new gun for the first time. He was shooting a Mossberg 500 and wasn't hitting much but he was enjoying himself.

At some point during the third round someone asked him what choke he was using. He answered that he had no choke in the gun (which, at the time I heard it, I took to mean it was a fixed choke barrel). After a few more stations I asked what constriction was in his barrel and he repeated "there's no choke in the barrel". I took a peek and sure enough, he had removed his choke tube from the gun. When I asked him why he had done that he replied "it came with a modified choke and the guy at Cabela's (Ottawa) told him it was the tightest choke available and not suitable for skeet. The guy told him he's be better off removing the choke tube".

That's a first for me !! We explained that it might be more appropriate to buy and install a skeet choke for the next time (right after mentioning the guy at Cabela's was an idiot).

It used to be called shooting the threads I doubt it is even done these days.

Was done in sporting clays for really close very fast targets.

More and more tubes these days maybe that situation will allow me to use the -.005 tube.

Back in the day one could tell a few people in a small circle how much you did not no about a particular subject now thanks to the Internet you can tell the whole world . Got love technology.

There where few guys shooting at the local trap gun club with a similar thought process.
Flawed as it is , they do walk and shoot amongst us.
