LOL!!! Yep, that's me all right! Frugal indeed...you must be a little frugal yourself to recognize that! I was frugal long before I was a gun nut...or being frugal made me a gun nut, you know how that goes...

You know I have a lugged hider myself but can't bring myself to grind it up for this yet so I'm not sure what I'll do with it!

well.... i have ONE lugged one left...... and it may have to go to replace one that canada post apparently has lost.... enroute to another fine CGN'er...... if his finally arives and i don't end up using this one as the replacement..... i might throw it in the EE .... but then again..... I have several personal builds that I would MUCH prefer to use an acurately machined usgi flash hider than a possibly out of spec norc, for the shorty mod.

A lot of the norcs i've seen have out of spec machining on those pesky F/H's and those particular F/H's may or may not solve the front sight dilema on the shorty. The usgi one is .... or should be..... machined to milspec so the front sight base should sit true to the F/H body.... unlike all 3 of the norc ones i'm sitting here lookin at.

your barrel has to be removed, cut to 18 3/4 " then chucked up and turned for 1/2 x 28 tpi and then recess crowned

out here on the west coast we all go to Dlask Arms to have this chop job and flash hider work done. even with shipping I'm sure it's the best deal out there for high quality work ;)

Yep, I rely on the fine folks at Dlask...took 3 flash hiders and a barrel there this afternoon.

I am not telling on Joe's prices but man, if you find a better deal anywhere I'd like to hear it!

A crown is included in the job. I would be amazed if you can find as good a deal anywhere, even if you have to ship it to him.

I guess it's worth pointing out that we've all taken a chop saw to the barrels before sending them to Joe so that there is less for him to deal with.

Best beer for this operation...hmmm...so far I have tried Kokanee, Corona and Granville Island...oh also Iron Horse. Hmmm....that one went pretty well.

I think Iron Horse is maybe the best bet for this operation.

I bet you if you call Joe and ask if you can send him a barrel with the FH cut off, the stub knocked out, and the bare flash hider, for the cut/crown/thread/sight thread etc, that by the time you get it back on your door you will have spent, including shipping, noticably less than if you dropped it off anywhere else.

There was a guy who sent his to another smith, and he paid more than what I paid for two guns. In fact it cost closer to three times what I paid. No kidding.

You don't have to remove the barrel. Leave the barrel in the receiver together with the gas system. A month ago, Dlask was charging $ 40 for chopping and threading a M14 or M305 barrel if the barrel and the gas system are still in the receiver but the rest of the parts are removed (bolt, trigger parts, ...).
If you are too lazy to remove all the parts and show at the door with a complete rifle, they charge an extra $ 20, so the total is $ 60 for the complete job and they put it back together for you.

This is a great idea!
I have a question, does the original flash hider look too big on the chopped M14? Thanks.

Well, I don't think so, but I guess that's a personal taste thing, so it's hard to say how it will look to anyone else.

I did take one that had no slots milled in, like the old American style polytech ones, cut it down to an inch or so long, then crenellated it and put it on my folder...but I don't happen to have pics around and I am having some camera trouble at the moment!
