The Ultimate Scout Rifle

I remember when Steyr brought out the scout rifle. It got a lot praise, but also a lot of: "WTF is it's purpose in life" & it's price point was high for back then...

Nice rifle for sure... But so is a Jungle carbine... I think Cooper's name attached to this rifle had more to do with sales than the actual rifle's features...

Same with Rugers now...

Long eye relief scopes have horrible field of view and make a front heavy gun which negates from off hand shooting.

With all respect, I disagree. I've shot lots of rifles with light, low powered scopes that were forward mounted. With both eyes open they can make for fast shooting rigs. If I was shooting/ hunting in an area where 200+ yard shots were the norm I wouldn't consider this type of set up though. Just my 2 cents...

This one is one of my regular black one with 5 shots mags, the test target is 10 rounds of GMM 168 gr at 100 yards... Results are around .5 MOA, this Scout was set up this day with a 3200 10X40 mildot regular scope... JP

I have owned long eye relief scopes and setup my rifles to use them. As i said, horrible field of view and the weight of the scope is forward to that of normal scopes. The only advantage a long eye relief scope offers is that the action is not crowded by the scope.

The rifle is outstanding, the scout scope idea not so much

As much as I love the idea of the modern scout rifle like the Steyr, their unobtainium magazines are prohibitive. So with my Ruger GSR in .308, I bought a bunch of MDT Tac (board sponsor) directly from their website for $39.99 each! Polymer magazines in 10 round configuration. All great fun!

Cheers,
Barney

It's like anything in life, you get what you pay for.
The minute you buy premium, you pay a premium.

I was lucky enough to get one of the Canadian ranger scouts and with the 10 round stock magazine you are carrying 20 rounds of 308!
Additional 10 round mags are around $150 but the quality is unmatched.
