The ultimate utility gun (dream concepts)?

I spend a couple weeks at a time in the bush, and can't refresh my ammo stocks. .22 Mag makes the most sense especially when I don't need the velocity, blast, or pelt damage of a centerfire. The only centerfire I'd consider is .22 Hornet, but one box of 50 Hornet rounds buys three boxes of .22 Mag and they do the same thing out of a utility gun. Who carries 50 rounds? When it's the size of a deck of cards, you bet I do! I spend a lot of time in remote areas, and I'll carry as much as I can. .22 Mag is fun to plink with, as well, and cheap.

Near nil benefit to barrels past 16" in .22 Mag, in fact one load even posts its highest velocity at 16" in 22 Mag and has slowed down past that (30gr CCI).

As for 20 gauge etc, I need to stick to 12 gauge in order to be able to launch flares, bean bags, and bangers.

Right on,
Do you fly in or hike?

Ok... so a K-Hornet over 12 gauge if you reload... a .22 WMR over 12 gauge if you don't reload... in a break action 18" is plenty short... stainless/ synthetic would be the way to go for weight and ruggedness, but tough to do.

For the concern about "regulation"... this is not an issue... zero for the rifle barrel... the shotgun will invariably be "close enough."

If you ever figured out a way to do this gun, I would be so in... a would fork out a significant amount to get it done... it would be a most useful "keeper."

Regulation won't matter if the only use for a slug is close in on bear. Now if part of the "utility gun" includes deer or a nice colour phase black bear at 100 yards, then regulation will matter for those that like to hit their target. Maybe I had the worst combo gun, but slugs and the rifle barrel were about 4 feet apart at 100.

IIRC, the Savage Model 24 was notorious for this kind of lack of barrel regulation. I think the return warranty for this problem was measured in mere days. And only for a brand new purchase of course.
A co-worker of mine had this model in 30-30/20 gauge. It also was terrible for this, but it was an old family heirloom. God only knows why he kept it!

Edit: My own meager experiences, I can only add that I once owned a Camper's Model C and a Garcia Bronco in 22/410. No problems here that I can remember.

I was thinking more about bird shot for small game and slugs up close for bear defense... I suppose if you put 100 yard shooting in the mix then regulation would come into play.

Ferlachs makes a sxs with a hidden 3rd barrel in the rib. You said dream gun so...45/70 by 410 with 22 mag in the rib.

The 410 is self explanatory. The 22 mag can go heavy tmj or light polymer tipped for small game further then the reach of the scatter gun. The 45/70 on the other hand can be a badass pellet gun (500 gr cast at 850fps) or 405 gr at 1900 fps for bear and moose

Price well I have no clue but I guarantee its beyond my means

For now I use a sxs 12 ga. Bird and ball

i think for my next decade birthday it will be a drilling 12x12 with one insert x9.3x74r plus a z6 1.7-10x42 now need to find a maker with the left hand side ...
