the ultimate Yukon rifle ... your thoughts

OP was best caliber and gun for Yukon.....if your a traveling hunter then take enough with you for the hunt.......if your a resident then Cabelas etc. will ship to home address..... And probably a good chance they will send to a motel address if that is you temporary residence!!

Yep believe it or not apapro some people do not have a fixed address for a large portion of the year.

conor is right, I suffer and enjoy this lifestyle as well, who knows where you'll be tomorrow- where the work or the game is. Apologies for the hijack just identified with this sentiment. It does make some aspects of guns ownership and feeding a challenge, a large part of why I stick to very standard chamberings for travel and work guns. It seems apapro assumes you stay put a lot even if you're on the move. Ideally, I like chamberings you can feed from a small hardware store or associate's "reserve" of cartridges for a gun in interesting places, Yukon included. .300 Mag is hard to beat in this scenario.

Gentlemen we have lost sight of the original question here...........an all around Yukon caliber........

RJ, just to clarify, the 416, was not a joint Taylor/Chatfield venture...........it was exclusively Mr. Taylors baby and hence is named .416 Taylor. The .375 on the same case was a joint venture and hence is called the 375 CT..........

Hmm ! Well Douglas - his name is " Robert Chatfield Taylor " so i think it can be called the Chatfield -Taylor seeing it was the Same man ! ;) :) RJ

Well RJ, I stand corrected............I did not know that, I have just never heard the 416 referred to as such, always just the 416 Taylor, while the 375 version has always been referred to as 375 Chatfield-Taylor. So I learned something today.........COOL, and thanks.

Thks Doug we ALL learn something NEW everyday if we want too ! I have learned from you too ! :D LOL Cheers RJ

i know another one.

i had a chat last week with a friend that had to shoot in DLP a grizzly sow and he was considering something bigger than his stainless synthetic winchester 30-06.

he got tips and hints from others like 300 magnum (winchester, wsm rum or weatherby) 338 win etc.

so in the discussion what will you choose or recommend?

i suggest a 375 ruger or hh if he was going higher ...

all the best.

What does DLP mean?

And it depends on how much you want to spend on the rifle but a 375H&H in a model 70 Alaskan would be my choice. I own one and it is very accurate to and past 300 metres, has lots of stopping power and will perform well on other smaller game too.

The stainless steel Savage Alaskan Brush Hunter in 375 Ruger has a 18" barrel and weighs 7.5 pounds which is light for a firearm in the 4500 - 5000 ft-lb power range.
The accu-trigger is fantastic.
Very accurate with the Hornady 270 grain factory ammo.

Just outta curiosity, how many rounds can you hold in that rifle? Like how many in the mag+one in the pipe. I was looking around for one the other day and could only find them in .338 winmag.

3+1. I have one. Only downside is it isn't CRF. I have a Ruger Alaskan in 416 ruger and a 375h&h and a couple 9.3x62s. One of the 9.3s and the 375H&H are Zastava 98s..a bit rough but reliable. The other 9.3 is a Tikka battue...really light with some nice sights for quick shooting but also not CRF. I bought the savage as I thought it was something I'd throw in the truck and was still a 375 if ever needed and wasn't too worried about it not being a CRF. I also have a 338rcm ruger I really love for the Yukon but, the ammunition can be a pain to find. I stockpile it when I can find it.

That being said for hunting I still generally use my 30-06. I do really like my 9.3x62s though...and I really love that 338rcm ruger except for the ammo

Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was 3+1 or 3 total (a la 2+1). Since I don't carry my rifle loaded all the time, only 2 in the mag wouldn't have been something I'm interested in.

.... have seen the brown and grizzly bears up close and personal.

Agreed. Funny how an unplanned close "meet and greet" encounter with any interested bear, can change people's perspective! Doesn't matter how many you have taken from a safe position/distance, unless they have had that close encounter, their advice, with all do respect, doesn't count.

The answer is the largest caliber that is practical for your purposes. Having said that, a little bit of learning about modern bullet technology has allowed me to downsize my carry gun with confidence. A 30-06 with right ammo is nothing to sneeze at. My 2 cents.

In the field a rifle without a round in the chamber is an unloaded rifle. An unloaded rifle is less useful than a stick in an emergency.

have been bluff charged and charged and had in hands from 12 ga with brenneke (dont ask how i got those ...) to 300 savage (works well on nice black bear in northern quebec) 30-06, 270 win, 303 up to 9.3x62. the one preferred in hands was the 375 ruger but never had it or needed it for now.

if a master guide like Phil Shoemaker said a 30-06 is enough even as a back up for brown bear and even if he prefers a 458 win mag or 375 ruger, if that can help and sum up.

but again we are not on the bear defense situation but the ultimate hunting rifle for Yukon ....
