The #4 and #5 have a unique extraction system for live and spend cases.
What I first thought was a thump cutout along the bolt raceway, just below the charger bridge, is actually part of the spend case ejection system.
When an spend case is being pullet from the chamber by the extractor hook, it will be ejected from the action by the force og the ejector hook alone, when it reaches this cutout along the bolt raceway.
Live rounds extracted from the chamber, will due to their extra lenght, as the bullets is still going along the chamber wall, not be ejected when they reach this cutout along the bolt raceway, and will first be ejected when they reach the ejector screw.
What I have learned from studying this unique #4 and #5, two way ejection system, is that the #4 and #5 actions have been custom build around the dimensions of the .303 British cartridge rim and lenght, and therefore any other cartridge rim diameter will not work properly, or might have some modification build in, in order to work properly in a #4 and #5 action.
