The War that made America

I saw most of the two episodes on yesterday (the second one being about the assault on Fort William Henry). As far as I'm concerned, it was well worth the time.

The whole notion of the natives' brutality having a "spiritual" context was eye-opening (including the taking of scalps and capturing hostages to replace dead kin). On the other hand, their rejection of the "European" notion of pursuing and "finishing off" a retreating opponent was unexpected.

Looks like life for most people in those times was "nasty, brutish and short".
