Sitting on the consignment rack at my local gun shop. 500$. A 1969 vintage model 670 Winchester in 30/06. 22” barrel, 3 position safety, matte receiver, blind mag, birch stock, 8.5# push-feed beauty. Came with a nice set of Leupold mounts and a long tube M8 4X scope. Came without the iron sights. Cleaned up, I swapped the scope and mounts and adjusted the trigger to 2.5#. The gun is hefty. Solid. Very well balanced. Amazingly so. I liked it before I shot it. Which can be dangerous.
I fired some old orphaned handloads from a gun that I sold years ago through it today.
What a great old piece.

I bought one new in 70’s with a weaver 4x scope, my only rifle until recently shot several moose, deer, bear, coyote, etc over the years. It has been an accurate rifle since new. We have grown old together and are looking our age but still functioning.
 
I bought one in 30-06 with a Weaver Challenger 4X from CanArm in 1989. Good rifle. Shot Prvi ammo in an inch and a bit.
Looks like you got a real good one. Is it stamped 670A ?
 
This one is stamped 670. But has the three position safety. Which apparently didn’t come out until 1971/72. The serial number is G218### which I thought was 1969 but now that I look a bit more it’s probably 1971/72 just before they stamped the barrel 670A
 
Bought a 30-06 new in 1975 army and navy on sale 149$ my buddy bought a 243 at the same times
They always had a 3 potsiion safety
They are a model 70 birch stock blind mag Matt bluing marketed as a entry $ rifle I have had a few over the years good $ value in today's world
 
I was gifted 670 in 3006 this year, it has stock issues that I fixed.
Shoots very well however.
If somoene mentions they are looking for a hunting rifle I will loan them that one to try and they can decide from there.
Blind mortise is the big one for most, but as far as a good shooting rifle go, a Winchester bolt is hard to beat!

Nice find and a shooter!! We wouldn’t be that lucky up here… Gerry little offering on the consignment rack at the only store we have and over priced stuff in my experience!
 
I picked up a 670A in 30-06 in a package deal, doesn’t look like it has seen more than a box of shells thru it. Required a little cleanup and is my dirty weather rifle!! Lol I also have an early 670 in 30-06 that is set up for the side safety like the Cooey 71. Unfortunately the Cooey 71 safety parts don’t match. Numrich had a few pieces that I needed but not all. Would like to get this project completed. If anyone has any leads on parts for this I’d appreciate you letting me know
These are great old school guns and often unappreciated

So do I , it was the end of an era when Bob shut the doors . I can't even remember how many rifles I bought at trail , well over 100 . To get back on thread , I picked up a Model 70 Lightweight Carbine in 30/06 from Bob for about 200 bones . It shot really well , but was a bit of a nuclear facial to shoot . My nephew has it now , he loves it . The 670's were a good solid rifle for the money , as were the Remington 788s .
 
Yep. The new gun rack might as well be full of scented candles for all I care. The nice old stuff is definitely where it’s at.

The early 670's did have the 2 position slide safety. I have an early .225WCF with serial #1056xx and could even be a first year model (1966-79) as serial numbers started at 100,000.
With a Weaver 4X it looks like it was just bought from Ernie's gun shop back in the day.

Agree. 70 Rangers too, I've owned, hmm, three of those I believe, all good shooters. - dan

Oh, ok. My Dad has 2 cooeys, a heavy barrel 225 and a 308 that his Dad bought new back in the 60's. Don't think it's even shot a box of shells.
