So I went to the range yesterday and the RO tried to lecture me on gun safety, to which I responded: "Son, I had an AR-15 before you were born." Did those words really just come out of my mouth???

Aye, when I were a lad, AR-15s only had two barrel twists, 1-in-12 or 1-in-14, an' they only had two barrel lengths: 16 inches or 20 inches. An' you counted yourself lucky if it had a chrome-plated bore. An' if you wanted spare parts, you phoned up Colt's and asked them: " 'ow much?"

An' furniture were only made of one thing, FIBREGLASS. There were only two stocks - regular or collapsible, an' the collapsible stock only had TWO positions. Open - and closed.

An' there were only two types of flash hider - birdcage or pointy.

Detachable carry handles? DETACHABLE CARRY HANDLES??? The only way your carry handle detached were if you used some crap handloads an' blew the thing up!

An' ammo only came in two types, 55 grain full metal jacket and if you were lucky, 52 grain softpoint. In fact if you were a complete poof and wanted to go hunting with one, you usually had to get it rechambered in .222 Remington.

An' there were only two types of optics - 3x20 or 4x20 and you were bloody lucky if you 'AD THAT.

An' magazines cost so much you were lucky if you 'ad more than TWO.

Show me 'ow to use an AR-15 safely, bugger me next you'll be trying to teach me 'ow to use the grip safety on a 1911.

I remember those days. I was torn between the AR15 an HK 91 and an HK 93. The HK's were $75 more and I couldn't afford it. That was just before they turned prohib. I never had any issues with mags, there were no export restrictions and you could get new military mags for like 5 bucks. The downside to 30 rd mags is that it was no problem going thru 1k ammo in a couple of hours. It didn't win friends with the neighbors (remember they weren't restricted, I shot mine on the farm and hunted groundhogs with it)

Minus the fact that good old days of owning ARs were very good (non-restricted, no barrel length bs, permitted for hunting, etc) in Canada, the rest of your post is well....waist of bandwidth. What you're really complaining about is a cocky young lad trying to show you up.

ARs have come such a long way since then and have improved tremendously in ALL aspect that makes everything else you mentioned mute.

Back in the days of 20/30/ and poor functioning drum mags one could dump hundreds of rounds in a few minutes. Gas tubes would be glowing,smoke from any oil evaporating and still it would never fail. All of the 'operators' of their modified 'platforms' have no idea how their modern hopped up mattel toys would last under sustained firing.

Yeah that brings back memories. A "mad minute" with a 75 round drum on an HBAR. It still got durn hot and smoky. And no case deflector so if you were a lefty it added to the challenge.

They would last as long as they always have. That is a ridiculous comment, when was the last time you witnessed an ar-15 melt? I used to live in the states and have seen people dump beta-c mags and run shrike uppers on ar's and m16's and have never seen one melt. That would take some serious effort and neglect. I suppose its possible but it would take some serious abuse....Oh the good old days before the properties of metal changed.....

IIRC, there were also those small-tube 3-9x "sharpshooter" scopes...I remember reading a memoir of an advisor attached to the ARVN who absolutely loved that setup on his "AR", despite the limited FOV.

Moral of the story is "old guys don't make mistakes", "the older you are and the longer you've owned guns the safer you are" and "unless your older than I am, you have no right to correct me". How many older drivers have you seen doing stupid things behind the wheel? Must not have been many since they've been driving since before you were born lol.

^^This excatly! I got a friend at work who's been shooting for 40 years. We went to the range a few weeks back and I could of swore he never shot a gun in his life. I've taken people shooting who have never shot a gun who were safer, and far more competent with a firearm than he is. He can tell you every little detail about his guns and seem like really know his stuff. But the second he's holding a gun your getting sweeped with the muzzle, while his finger is on the trigger. I guess I was out of line when I corrected my elder for dong something stupid and dangerous.

BTW, he also happens to enjoy talking about the days when the only ar-15 you could get was Colt.

I had a chance to play with the absolute state of the art in AR's in the 1980's - it was a carbine, with collapsible stock (wooaaah!) a long 'flash hider' and it had an Armson OEG mounted on the handle, man it was something like showing up to the range today with an FS2000, or G36. Between that and doing mag dumps with a Type 56 fitted with an RPK drum, or dumping 20 rounders through the FN - well, it's just not the same anymore.
