There's a B17 comming to Penticton !

Thanks S of H and thanks to "Mrs Purple" for doing a good job on the camera. We enjoyed the afterglow holed up in the AC this afternoon watching the movie "Memphis Belle" as well as the original wartime documentary of the same name.

One of the coolest things about the B-17 visit here was seeing one of my old pals, who served as a rear gunner for 33 missions on a Halifax bomber during WW2, get a complimentary flight in a B-17 nose seat. His wife, who is also a pilot, got to go as well. It was quite a week for him starting with his being presented with the French Legion d' Honneur by the local MP with front page coverage in the local paper. He had a heart attack this spring and has bounced back quite nicely. All of this has been a big boost for his morale.

Thanks for posting Purple the event, and to the pics by S of H as well. A great day for all indeed. The B-17 was always my favorite bomber from WW2, maybe because of a model so long ago, not sure really, but that picture by NaOH pretty much sums up how I feel about them, kind of makes them look indestructible.

I recall being in a hanger that had a B17 and a Canso in it (Gander - 1955). I think the Canso was bigger.

B17 74 ft wingspan

Canso 104 ft

Lancaster 102 ft

Canso is not easy to fly. No flaps and needs a lot of rudder to turn.

Beautiful plane and pictures.

I remember at Lincoln Park(Calgary)watching the Harvards, Lancs, Mitchells and Mustangs . Our PMQ backed onto the glide path. I remember what looked like a pregnant Lanc come in and ran off the runway. An Avro York.

Wingspan on the B17G 103.75'.

The Liberator was a little bigger at 110'. I remember my dad talking about doing square searches over the Indian Ocean with the outbaords feathered on the Libs so they could extend their legs a bit.
