It makes me a little sad that this lovely gun has a name that is either a mouthful or a suggestion it is named after a dimwit. People sometimes comment, "nice gun! what make is it?" and I usually just reply "its German"...

That said, it is my winter project. I bought this gun earlier this year from a fellow CGN'r and waited till the fall upland season to really see if it was going to be a keeper. After getting used to the slightly different geometry to the triggers, and putting on a leather slip-on pad to bring out the LOP, I fell in love with it.

But, being around 100 years old, I decided to try to breathe some new life into her. Apart she came...

The pictures don't show it, but the stock was full of dings and dents from being used in the field. The forestock was noticeably darker (and dirtier) than the rear, and although the rear stock appeared to have some decent figure, I thought it had the potential to be a bit more brilliant.

Same with the metal bits. I figured they could do with a good ultrasonic bath, hoping some of the case colour I could see under the grime, might pop back out.

Whatever happens down the road, this gun will remain a working gun and regardless how pretty it may or may not turn out, I intend to use it A LOT.

Dilly, so glad to see you are having a go at this gun. Can't wait to see the developments. And I'm in agreement.....wonderful guns...horrible name. LOL

Nice looking gun for sure, but am I to understand you already cleaned it up? Where's the before pictures?

As to the name, Nimrod is a Biblical king, described as 'a mighty hunter' (in contrast to all the shepherds them books usually exalt). Mentioned in passing, really, but the attribute of dim-wittedness is nowhere to be found in the accounts; rather he is represented as a figure of opposition to the Lord, a rebel, perhaps hubris in thinking himself equal to the big guy himself.

His official lineage is the great-grandson of Noah, but it's his apocryphal extra-Biblical connection that leads to his name being engraved on your shotgun: it is said that his two sons were the founders of the Huns (Gerrys) and the Magyar (Hungarios). Thus the mighty hunter, progenitor of two proud central European peoples, what better brand for a shotgun?

The connotation of Nimrod and nincompoop is quite recent, 20th century actually. Believe it or don't, Bugs Bunny himself called Elmer Fudd 'Nimrod,' and irony as always going over the heads of the audience, people thought it was an insult term they just hadn't heard before. Weird.

LOL. I am glad you guys are picking up on some of my humour. Sometimes it gets lost in the text. I am glad Red explained the Nimrod name. I was aware of the history and the Bugs Bunny thing. Too much to explain to someone in the field however.

The gun pics are “before”. It was in nice shape and arguably could have been left alone, but I am cursed with being bothered by little imperfections called patina. If I am responsible for the patina, it never bothers me. If it is from someone else, I try to clean it up.

And the sling! I use it all the time. Those two four-legged devils in the last picture require a firm hand and that sling comes in handy when a fuzz faced companion gets too enthusiastic during a retrieve.

Hahaha. I like that. If you don't mind, I'm going to use that. It's exactly how I feel. My patina is just fine. Someone else's? Forget it.

See, that's the difference between you and I: I would absolutely stop in the middle of a hunt to explain for 20 minutes at least, with citations from both Genesis and Warner Brothers, how Nimrod is a proud moniker!

Keep up the good work, but I'm more jealous of your dogs...

.
"Nimrod "is only a proud moniker if used in that context, quite often it is used as in sarcastic way as well.

I am very lucky to have access to a high quality ultrasonic cleaner at my former workplace. I put all the metal parts in for a 25 minute ride. I did not take the entire action apart as there are a couple of buggered screws on the opening lever I did not want to make worse.

I am always mesmerized at the clouds of gunk that comes off in this thing. This gun was pretty clean looking when it went in.

It comes out REALLY CLEAN afterwards

The case colours are a bit more brilliant now. The flash brought them out in this picture. Not quite as a dramatic result as Canvasback's Lindner...

I am going to set this stuff aside for now and concentrate on the wood.
