Thin body glue for stock repair

That is the trouble with tape, it will always make mess, that is why it is a idea to take off the stuff after a hour, yellow glue will have set, but you will still be able to scrape it off.
Overnight you have to cut or file it off.
But that looked like it turned out good.
The old varnish/ finish will help as it seals the wood from the glue, on the out side of the crack.
if the glue soaks into the grain, your finish will not work where the glue is, unless you do a lot of sanding, and if you do that , you have to sand the whole stock to make it look right.
With oil finishes, sometimes you can blend in quite good.

Most glues and epoxies will not stick to old oil soaked wood and are difficult to get into the crack. If you can push /trickle Gorilla Glue Original in as best as you can (carefully pry open gap if possible). When you have got the Gorilla glue in as best as you can, squirt a bit of water into the crack to jump-start the Gorilla glue and clamp it tight. Wipe off the squeeze out that will expand out of the crack for some time.
