That is the trouble with tape, it will always make mess, that is why it is a idea to take off the stuff after a hour, yellow glue will have set, but you will still be able to scrape it off.
Overnight you have to cut or file it off.
But that looked like it turned out good.
The old varnish/ finish will help as it seals the wood from the glue, on the out side of the crack.
if the glue soaks into the grain, your finish will not work where the glue is, unless you do a lot of sanding, and if you do that , you have to sand the whole stock to make it look right.
With oil finishes, sometimes you can blend in quite good.
